Cristiano Ronaldo has been an out-and-out goalscorer for the past few seasons and younger football fans may not realise what a sensational dribbler the Portuguese football used to be.

But back in the day, particularly during his six-year spell with Manchester United, Ronaldo was probably the best - and most exciting - dribbler in world football.

Not only did he possess every trick in the book but he was also absolutely rapid and powerful, too.

He was a full-back’s worst nightmare and terrorised many top-level defenders with his skill.

Every time he received the ball, he immediately looked to attack. And this made him the most exciting player on the planet - alongside Lionel Messi, of course - for quite a few years.

A video is currently doing the rounds on social media which shows Ronaldo completing 20 - yes, TWENTY - dribbles in a single match while playing for Man Utd.

Back in September 2006, Ronaldo ran Benfica’s players ragged in the Champions League.

Louis Saha scored the only goal of the game on the hour-mark but Ronaldo was the star of the show.

Back in Lisbon, playing against his former club Sporting’s fierce rivals, the Portugal international was clearly intent on showcasing his talents and embarrassing the opposition in the process.

And the result was a quite remarkable dribbling display.

Ridiculous. What Man Utd would give to have a 21-year-old Ronaldo in their squad right now.

Fabio Capello recently raised eyebrows by claiming Ronaldo hadn’t “dribbled [past] an opponent for three years”.

That’s an exaggeration, of course, but the truth is Cristiano no longer dribbles past opponents like he used to - which is hardly surprising considering he turns 35 in February.

But every now and again it’s great to look back and remember just how exciting Ronaldo used to be.

And this video showing him dribbling Benfica players for fun provides an enjoyable trip down memory lane.
