Manchester City might be 14 points behind Liverpool in the Premier League but they’re sitting comfortably in the Champions League.

Pep Guardiola’s side have already secured top spot in Group C after picking up 11 points from their opening five matches.

Meanwhile, the three other teams in the group - Shakhtar Donetsk, Dinamo Zagreb and Atalanta - were battling for the second spot.

City made several changes for their visit to Zagreb and found themselves 1-0 down thanks to a brilliant 10th-minute volley from Dani Olmo.

However, City levelled in controversial circumstances.

The home side had TWO players down and City refused to kick the ball out.

It led to Riyad Mahrez’s cross being headed in by Gabriel Jesus.

City were well within their rights to carry on but when that goal could knock Zagreb out, the home side felt aggrieved by their actions.

While the home side were furious with the officials after City's goal, they could consider themselves very fortunate not to be reduced to ten men just before half-time.

Amer Gojak appeared to purposely elbow Rodri in the face but, after a VAR check, play was allowed to continue.

Astonishing.

City will just be looking to come out of this match unscathed.

They face Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon and could be 17 points behind Liverpool by the time they kick-off at the Emirates.

Once they've got this final group match out of the way, Guardiola's side can concentrate on domestic action and attempt to chase down the Reds before the Champions League begins again in February.
