Liverpool are ready to complete a deal to sign Takumi Minamino from Red Bull Salzburg for just £7.25 million in the January transfer window.

According to Paul Joyce of The Times, the Reds are prepared to accelerate their interest in the Japan international next month and exploit his low release clause.

Minamino impressed for Salzburg against Liverpool in Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat and also shone at Anfield when the two clubs met in the Champions League in October.

He’s available for a fraction of his true market value, which explains Liverpool’s interest.

The Merseyside outfit discussed a deal for Minamino in the summer and his performances against them this season have only increased Jurgen Klopp’s desire to sign him.

The Times’ report says Klopp is the “driving force” behind the prospective transfer as the German looks to add more talent to his attacking options.

The move seems to be a no-brainer from Liverpool’s perspective. Minamino is 24 years old and has top flight European experience.

His versatility is a key asset, too. He can play wide, behind the striker and as an attacking midfielder.

Minamino has weighed in with nine goals and 11 assists in 22 appearances for Salzburg this season.

The Mirror have pointed out another factor behind the move - Liverpool’s desire to expand in the Far East market next year.

Minamino has a huge following in the Far East. And in recent court hearings as Liverpool won a case to leave current kit manufacturer New Balance, the Reds admitted they are desperate to break into that market with new kit supplier Nike.

Minamino would help Liverpool break into the market and would be supported by a strong Nike presence in the area.

On the pitch, his addition to the squad would boost Liverpool’s chances of adding to their trophy cabinet.

The Reds are already in a great position to win the Premier League title for the first time in their history.
