Bayern Munich are statistically the strongest team in Champions League group stage history.

The German side finished top of their group, winning all six games and taking a maximum 18 points.

Only six other clubs have ever achieved that in the competition.

AC Milan did it in 1992/93, Paris Saint-Germain did so in 1994/95, Spartak Moskva then managed it in 1995/96 and then Barcelona finished with a 100% record in 2002/03.

Real Madrid are the only side to win all six group games twice, in 2011/12 and 2014/15.

So already, Bayern have done pretty well. But their impressive goal difference makes them the best team in Champions League group stage history.

The Bundesliga champions qualify for the knockouts with a goal difference of +19. They scored 24 goals and conceded just five times.

No other team that won all six group games had such a superior goal difference.

GIVEMESPORT's Ollie Browning says:

What a brilliant achievement for Bayern. They have been the best team in Europe this season and have the stats to back it up.

Much of their impressive goal difference can be credited to a superb performance away to Tottenham earlier this year.

Bayern dominated the north London side and won 7-2. Results like that suggest they should be considered amongst the favourites to win the Champions League

Is there really a club in Europe that would want to face the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry right now?

Yes, their league form is patchy but a record-breaking group stage campaign proves that on the big stage, Bayern are always a threat.

They could face either Chelsea, Real Madrid, Atalanta, Atletico Madrid, Napoli or Lyon in the last 16 and it's hard to see any one of those teams fancying their chances against the Bavarian side.
