Japanese forward Takumi Minamino is set to become Liverpool’s first transfer of the January window, signing from Red Bull Salzburg for just £7.25 million. The 24-year-old has been on the Reds’ radar for some time now with the European champions keeping tabs on him for six months, according to the Mirror. So when the Merseyside outfit were joined by Salzburg in this year’s Champions League group stage, it gave Minamino the opportunity to show Anfield what he’s made of.And he certainly did that. With the score at 3-1 in favour of Liverpool, Minamino latched on to a cross from the left to fire past Adrian and spark hopes of a comeback.

However, it wasn’t to be as Mohamed Salah netted with 20 minutes to go despite the Austrians equalising nine minutes before.

Minamino’s strike proved to be the final tick in a box that prompted Liverpool to capture his signature.

And when the ball rustled the net, Jurgen Klopp couldn’t help but laugh.

It’s safe to say, the Liverpool boss was happy with the contribution of his signing-to-be.

The pair met again in the reverse fixture on Tuesday night in their final group game and Minamino played the full 90 minutes.

Naby Keita and Salah wrote their names on the score-sheet as the Reds progressed to the knockout stages as group toppers after winning 2-0.

It was a different story for Salzburg though as they bowed out of the competition after clinching third place.

Minamino will have to watch the Reds’ attempt to defend their European title from the sidelines due to his contributions with Salzburg this season.

The move is set to be completed on January 1 and the Japanese international is likely to make his debut against Everton in the FA Cup four days later.
