The six fastest players in the Premier League so far this season have been revealed - and there's a surprising name in first place. 

Leicester City defender Caglar Soyuncu has clocked a sprint at 23.3mph (37.49kph), which is quicker than anyone else in the top flight. 

Yes, 23.3mph! That's quite ridiculous, especially for a centre-back. No wonder the Foxes have a great defensive record, with that kind of speed at the back. 

Another surprising player has made the second-fastest sprint - Southampton's 32-year-old striker Shane Long. 

The Irishman is proving that age is just a number when it comes to speed, out-running many opponents 10 years younger than him. He clocked in at 23.2mph against Newcastle last week. 

In third is Manchester City teenager Phil Foden, who has reached a top speed of 23.1mph, just slightly slower than Long. 

Kyle Walker and Aston Villa defender Bjorn Engels share fourth place, both clocking in at 22.9mph. 

Rounding off the top six is Newcastle's new signing Allan Saint-Maximin, who has reached a top speed of 22.8mph since arriving in the Premier League.

We may only be four months into the 2019/20 campaign, but Soyuncu's top speed has already beaten last season's record. 

That was held by Fulham loanee Timothy Fosu-Mensah, but his 21.95mph sprint has been absolutely demolished. 

Interestingly, Newcastle boss Steve Bruce claims Saint-Maximin actually got injured while sprinting last weekend. 

"He pulled his hamstring doing 22.8mph. I don’t think anybody has run that fast in the Premier League for us before, so what can you do?" Bruce said, per The Sun. 

"He ran 30, 40, 50 yards to chase the ball. It was proper sprinting. We all know he’s got lightning pace and he’s got such a low centre of gravity.

"He’s explosive and when you run the way he does, then you’re always a bit susceptible, I suppose. We’ll kick ourselves but, unfortunately, these things happen."

The Premier League's speed demons have at least five more months to catch up with Soyuncu's top speed. 

But with the defender clocking in at a ridiculous 23.3mph, it's going to take some serious effort to beat him.
