Arsenal’s humiliating 3-0 home defeat yesterday to Manchester City means they now have just one win in their last 12 games in all competitions.

The Gunners are in free fall, with Unai Emery’s interim replacement Freddie Ljungberg doing little to steady the ship.

It was always going to be a tough ask for the Arsenal legend, but many would have expected more of a change in results and performances than there has been.

So is it time for Arsenal to drastically change approach?

Sam Allardyce has been out of work since leaving Everton at the end of the 2017-18 season, but he is 100/1 to take over at the Emirates.

Big Sam has a track record of shoring up Premier League defences, as proven by The Toffees recording five clean sheets in his first seven games in charge, and he believes he could do the same with Arsenal.

“Arsenal have lost their way at the moment,” Allardyce told TalkSport. “They need to bond and connect as a squad, somebody needs to get in the dressing room.

“I could come and work on Arsenal’s defence and make them better tomorrow, not a problem whatsoever.

“I’ve done it everywhere I’ve been – Newcastle, Blackburn, Bolton, West Ham Crystal Palace, Everton, I’ve done it all there.

“But what you can’t do is get the front line performing that much better, you’ve got to hope you’ve got good quality players up there, and Arsenal have. The top end of Arsenal is unbelievable.”

While Allardyce, philosophically, couldn’t be further away from the ideas that Arsene Wenger instilled in the club, the Gunners’ hopeless backline definitely need some help.

Big Sam also believes there is a key tactic that both Emery and Ljungberg have missed, something that Arsenal fans have been crying out for: get Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette up top together.

“Lacazette and Aubameyang are two of the best goalscorers in the Premier League, they proved that last year,” said Allardyce.

“But you’ve got to get them up front. You’ve got to fit them in and play to (their) strengths, and I’m not so sure they’re doing that at the moment.

“Aubameyang is not a front-up player, he likes to go in behind, he wants to live on the shoulder and have balls played down the side and down the channels with quality.

“You’ve got to go 4-4-2 or play a back-three and go 3-5-2. You’ve got to get them up front.”

Carlo Ancelotti has been linked to the Gunners’ hot seat, having recently been sacked by Napoli following a poor run of results.

Although it may just be tactics from Big Sam to edge himself closer to the Emirates dugout, he believes that Ancelotti wouldn’t want to risk going to Arsenal.

“I’m not so sure Ancelotti would want it.

“A manager of his calibre would look at the quality of the squad and wouldn’t want to put his own reputation and career at that much risk.”
