Liverpool are currently on a 34-match unbeaten run in the Premier League as they look to beat Arsenal’s record of 49 matches without losing.

Jurgen Klopp’s side last lost in the league back on January 3, 2019 when they were beaten 2-1 by Manchester City.

It was their only defeat in the entire 2018/19 league campaign but it was a costly one as they finished just one point behind City, despite picking up 97 points.

While Liverpool are closing in on Arsenal’s Premier League record, they’re quite some way away from breaking a European record.

With help from The Malestrom, we’ve identified the 15 clubs with the longest unbeaten runs in European football history - and it’s fair to say Liverpool have got a very long way to go to break the 104 game record!

55 Games | Shakhtar Donetsk & Porto

Shakhtar’s unbeaten run came back in 2002 as they won their first Ukrainian Premier League title, while also making their first appearance in the Champions League knockout stages.

Meanwhile, Porto’s run - under Andre Villa Boas - took place between 2010 and 2012 as they dominated the Portuguese Liga.

56 Games | Benfica & Celtic

Porto must have been gutted to fall one game short of Benfica’s record, which they set in the 1970s. They went two seasons unbeaten between 1976-1978.

Celtic also went 56 games unbeaten under Brendan Rodgers recently and have won the last 10 trophies on offer in Scotland. It wasn’t the longest unbeaten run Celtic have been on though…

58 Games | Skonto, Olympiacos & Milan

Latvian side Skonto won the league from 1992 through to 2004 and lost just one game in four seasons between 1994-1997.

Olympiacos have won the Greek league 44 times and, while the 1970s wasn’t their most dominant era, they won three consecutive titles between 1972-1975. They lost once in each of those three campaigns, but managed to put together 58 games unbeaten.

These days, Milan can barely string two wins together but in the 1991/92 season, they were probably the best side in Europe. With the likes of Franco Baresi, Paulo Maldini, Ruud Guillet and Marco van Basten, they went the entire season unbeaten as they won three consecutive Serie A titles.

59 Games | Pyunik & Shirak

Who could forget when these two Armenian sides went 59 games unbeaten?

Pyunik did it fairly recently from 2002-2004, while Shirak achieved it from 1993-1995.

60 Games | Union Saint-Gilloise

They may play in the Belgian second division now but Union Saint-Gilloise dominated the Belgian first tier in the early 1900s.

From 1903/04 through to 1909/10, they won the title six times and went on an unbeaten run of 60 matches.

The Belgian side are actually currently owned by Brighton chairman Tony Bloom.

61 Games | Levadia

Estonian side Levadia won the Meistriliiga in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. It was during the latter two successes they managed to avoid defeat in 61 games.

62 Games | Celtic

We told you Celtic went on an even better run than their recent 56 games unbeaten.

Willie Maley managed the club for 43 years from 1897-1940.

It was during his title wins during the 1915/16 and 1916/17 seasons that Celtic didn’t lose in 62 matches.

63 Games | Sheriff Tiraspol

Since being founded in 1996, Moldovan side Sheriff Tiraspol have won 19 league titles in 23 seasons.

They won 10 on the bounce between 2000 and 2010, going the entire 2006/07 campaign unbeaten during their 63 game streak.

88 Games | Lincoln Red Imps

Our plucky runners-up.

The Gibraltar side won the National League 14 times in-a-row between 2003 and 2016. During that run, they went 88 games unbeaten.

They’ve also played in the Champions League qualifiers in the last four seasons, beating Celtic 1-0 in their first leg in 2016, before losing the second leg 3-0.

104 Games | Steaua Bucharest

ONE HUNDRED AND FOUR GAMES!?

In the late 80s, Steaua won Divizia A five seasons in a row and simply couldn’t be beaten. They even won the European Cup in 1986, beating Barcelona on penalties, before they lost the final in 1989 to AC Milan.

The Romanian side have won 26 league titles to date but last won it in 2014/15.

It’s a record that is almost impossible to beat.

So, there we have the 15 clubs with the longest unbeaten records in European football history.

Many will argue that these records occurred in leagues where, at the time, that particular side was dominant.

While that may be the case, the ability to keep that winning mentality - or must not lose mentality - for so long is seriously impressive.

That’s why in the Premier League era, only Arsenal have gone unbeaten. Even the incredible Manchester City side in recent years have suffered losses.

When you’re that good, every side that plays you desperately wants to beat you - especially when you’re on a long unbeaten run.

Liverpool may not look like losing right now but it’s highly unlikely they will be good enough to even feature in this list one day.
