The WSL concluded for 2019 over the weekend as just four of the fixtures go ahead, the other two succumbing to the weather conditions.

In-form Charles helps Liverpool secure a point

Struggling Liverpool provided the weekend's shock result, picking up a point against the high-flying Chelsea.

Liverpool came into the game having picked up just two points in their last nine games - compared to Chelsea's 22 points in eight games.

It was the home side who got off to a strong start when Chelsea failed to clear Linnett's free-kick, leaving the in-form Niamh Charles to poke home and give her side the lead.

It took just 10 minutes for Chelsea to get back on level terms with Guro Reiten providing a quality ball into the box where England headed beyond Kitching in the Liverpool goal.

England had the chance to put Chelsea ahead before the end of the half, latching onto Mjelde's ball into the box but the forward headed wide from close range.

The game was end-to-end with both sides having their fair share of opportunities to take all three points.

Babajide had the chance to grab the win with her effort in the final moments of the game but Berger was equal to her near-post effort to ensure a point for her side.

Following Arsenal and City wins, Chelsea now slips to third in the table - albeit with a game in hand. Even a win in that game would leave them lagging Arsenal by a point showing just how crucial it is in this league to not slip up.

With that point on the board and a helping hand from goal difference, Liverpool lift themselves off the bottom of the table ahead of Bristol who have a game in hand on them.

Arsenal go clear at the top

Defending Champions Arsenal looked to end 2019 on a high up against an Everton side enjoying their resurgence under manager Willie Kirk.

The away side were quick to pile on the pressure, with Everton keeper Korpela saving twice in the opening minutes from Miedema and Walti.

Despite Everton's reluctant defending, it took just 14 minutes for Arsenal to go ahead through none other than Miedema - latching onto the end of Little's cross to head beyond Korpela.

Concerns arose for Arsenal winger Beth Mead who was stretchered off following what looked to be an ankle injury; Arsenal's number 23 was seen on crutches after the game.

The dominance of the defending Champions continued in the second half, with the game wrapped up inside the hour.

Captain Little slotted away a penalty just minutes before Miedema got her second of the game and 14th WSL goal of the season so far.

Everton's best efforts weren't enough to inspire a remarkable comeback, instead of settling for a late consolation following a rare error by Williamson at the back allowing Kelly into slot home for the Toffees.

Following their defeat, Everton remains in 5th place - level on points with Manchester United.

The three points for Arsenal give them some daylight at the top of the table going into the new year - sitting three points clear of City and four points clear of Chelsea.

Reading leave it late

A mid-table clash between two sides hoping to climb up the league all came to fruition in the later stages of the game, providing an entertaining finish.

The first half was as quiet as they come, with neither side managing to get a foothold in the game. The most action came from Becky Spencer's brilliant double save against Reading captain Fara Williams.

The deadlock was finally broken around the 50th-minute mark and it was worth the wait - Graham's corner was played into Siri Worm who took one touch before curling the ball into the top corner giving Spurs the lead.

Just when it looked like Spurs would hold on for all three points, a Williams corner failed to be cleared and the ball fell to Jo Potter who got Reading back on level terms.

In the final minutes of the 90, Allen was the most alert player in the box to latch onto the end of a loose ball and poke the ball home - completing Reading's 10-minute comeback.

The points were sealed late on in stoppage time when Eikeland broke through on goal and put the ball beyond Morgan in goal.

Their comeback means Reading move up to sixth in the table as Tottenham drop to seventh - a point behind the former.

Business as usual for City

It was business as usual for Manchester City yesterday as they welcomed Brighton to the City Academy Stadium in their final fixture of the year.

Brighton's heavy defeat began just minutes into the game when they were penalised for a back pass in their area, resulting in an indirect free kick being awarded to City.

Houghton stepped up to take the free-kick and made no mistake hammering home for City to give them the lead.

The home side were at it again just 10 minutes later, this time it was White who was on the end of Beckie's ball into the box to double their lead.

The game was all but wrapped up inside 40 minutes as a ball across goal was touched home by Lauren Hemp giving City a 3-0 lead.

Brighton showed glimpses of getting back into the game - including having a goal ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper as Umotong challenged for the ball against Roebuck. Le Garrac also saw her effort saved by Roebuck, who wound up keeping a clean sheet in City's rampant runout.

Stanway got herself on the scoresheet after showing brilliant composure to go around Sophie Harris in the Brighton goal and coolly put the ball in the back of the net.

City's five-star display was ultimately rounded off by Bremer, who scored just five minutes after her introduction to them - getting on the end of yet another cross from Beckie.

City now sits a point above Chelsea but - following their defeat to Arsenal earlier in the season - trail the defending Champions at the top by three points.

This defeat for Brighton leaves them in 10th place, still having daylight between themselves and Bristol and Liverpool going into the new year.

Elsewhere in the WSL, Birmingham v Manchester United and Bristol v West Ham United were both cancelled due to weather conditions making their pitches unplayable.

The WSL will pick up again in the new year with fixtures being played January 5th.
