The world chess champion is number one in Premier League fantasy football

Magnus Carlsen is a very intelligent person.

The Norwegian is currently ranked as the best chess player in the world.

He has won the last four chess world championships, picking up his first in 2013 before retaining his crown in 2014, 2016 and 2018.

And it also appears he has an incredible talent at fantasy football.

That’s because Carlsen is now ranked first in the world at Premier League fantasy football.

That’s right. As well as being the best chess player in the world, he’s also the best fantasy football player.

His team, ‘Kjell Ankedal’, scored 74 points this week to take him to the summit. At the time of writing he leads 7,192,732 other players.

You can view his team below:

Shortly before hitting top spot, Carlsen shared his strategy on Twitter.

“Since a lot of people are asking about my #FPL strategy, mine is the not so groundbreaking one of part stats and part gut feeling. Part @Opta-mist and part optimist. Patent pending,” he wrote.

The 29-year-old previously claimed he was just ‘lucky’ when it came to fantasy football.

“In chess, you know when you’ve done well and when you’ve done poorly, but it’s hard for me to take praise for fantasy league, when I’ve just been lucky,” he told Norwegian TV in October, per the Guardian.

It doesn’t appear that he’s lucky, though. That’s because he’s also had success in previous years.

Carlsen has finished in the top 180,000 players in each of the last four seasons.

Last season he finished 24105th, while in the 2017/18 campaign he came 2397th.

Seriously impressive stuff. But he’s almost certainly not going to be the leading player at the end of the gameweek.

Carlsen currently has a one-point lead at the top. Incredibly, that lead is from former Liverpool defender, Nick Tanner.

Tanner has three players playing in Crystal Palace vs Brighton on Monday night: Martin Kelly, Lewis Dunk and Matthew Ryan.

But let’s not take anything away from Carlsen. To be the best in the world at chess while currently also leading the world in fantasy football is incredible.
