Being brought on as a substitute only to be taken off minutes later is one of the ultimate humiliations in football, but Everton’s Moise Kean had the misfortune of experiencing it on Sunday.Kean was brought on in the 70th minute of Everton’s match against Manchester United, only to be replaced 18 minutes later. The game drew millions of viewers around the world and so millions saw Kean’s embarrassment. The 19-year-old didn’t make eye contact with Everton interim boss Duncan Ferguson, who insisted he was just trying to waste some time.“I thought he had not quite got into the pace of the game,” Ferguson said, per BBC Sport.

"We put on a guy [Oumar Niasse] that handles it better.

“Nothing about Moise. I've been there, I've been subbed off but we'll pick him up, he'll come again, he's only 19."

Kean managed just nine touches of the ball and a clip shows he appeared to be struggling from a lack of fitness.

The Italian forward has struggled since his arrival at Goodison Park, failing to score in 12 Premier League appearances, and now his confidence will likely be at rock bottom.

But it wasn’t meant to be like this. When he joined the club from Juventus in the summer, Everton’s director of football Marcel Brands even promised Kean’s mother that they will take care of him.

“We will take care of your son. And I hope to see you often,” Brands said as he presented Kean’s mother with an Everton shirt that had ‘Mami’ printed on the back.

Ferguson didn’t get the memo.

Everton paid an initial fee of £25.1 million to sign Kean in the summer but a new report from The Athletic claims he didn’t even feature on the club’s original transfer wish-list that was compiled by Brands and former manager Marco Silva.

“There were five names on that list,” a source said. “Kean wasn’t even on it.

Nobody had discussed, or wanted, Kean up to that point.

Kean's move excited Everton supporters but it's been a downhill ride.
