In a debate between Paul Scholes and Steven Gerrard, Thierry Henry knows who he’s going for.

The Frenchman opted for the former Manchester United midfielder during an appearance on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football programme in 2015.

Henry, who scored 228 goals for Arsenal, was asked if there were any players, current or former, who he wishes he could have played with.

He paused for a moment before naming Scholes, winner of 11 Premier League titles with United.

“Paul Scholes,” Henry said.

"The next one would have been, right behind, very close, Stevie G. But I have to go with Paul Scholes.

"He was just ahead in his head. He made Manchester United tick. Every time we were playing them we needed to find a way to stop him.

"It's true. I think Stevie G comes really close to him. But Paul Scholes would have to win."

Henry went on to remember England’s terrific midfield during the so called ‘Golden Generation’, which included Scholes, Gerrard, David Beckham and Frank Lampard.

"You guys in England had, on paper, the best midfield in the world,” he added, in front of Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher.

The debate over which player was the best between Scholes, Gerrard or Lampard is one that we’ve all had in the pub.

The Champions League’s official Twitter account ran a poll asking followers to vote for their preferred choice and they received more than 85,000 votes.

Gerrard came out on top after collected 40% of the votes, with Scholes receiving 34% and Lampard the remaining 26%.

ANALYSIS

GIVEMESPORT’s Scott Wilson says:

Sorry Scholesy and Lamps, but this writer is a part of Team Gerrard.

Watching the former Liverpool midfielder put the team on his back on countless occasions, including in the 2005 Champions League final and 2006 FA Cup final, was incredible.

A Premier League title unfortunately evaded him but that was more to do with his loyalty to Liverpool than a lack of talent.

The fact that Jose Mourinho tried to sign him when he was the manager of Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid tells you everything you need to know about Gerrard.
