Tonight's instalment of El Clasico is without doubt the biggest game of the 2019/20 season so far.

Barcelona and Real Madrid go into the game at the Camp Nou level on points in the La Liga table, with goal difference the only thing keeping the Blaugrana in top spot.

Ernesto Valverde's side were held to a 2-2 draw by Real Sociedad on Saturday, before Real Madrid had to salvage a point late in the day against Valencia on Sunday evening.

Karim Benzema dramatically scored in the 95th minute at the Mestalla to level up the score at 1-1 following Carlos Soler's opener.

Benzema has been in frightening form for Los Blancos this season, scoring 12 goals in La Liga alone.

Only Lionel Messi has matched that tally and it's safe to say that the battle between the Argentine and the Frenchman is El Clasico's newest and biggest rivalry.

For a decade, world football's biggest fixture was defined by Messi's never-ending skirmish with his eternal nemesis, Cristiano Ronaldo.

But with the Portuguese leaving for Juventus in the summer of 2018, a new competitor had to be found.

In Benzema, Messi, Barcelona and the watching eyes of the world have that competitor!

MESSI & BENZEMA'S LA LIGA STATS IN 2019/20

They're scoring and creating at pretty much the same rate this season and it seems all but a certainty that one of them will have the final say tonight at the Camp Nou.

However, historically there's only one winner between the pair.

In El Clasico fixtures, Messi has scored 26 goals - the most of any player - while Benzema has only scored nine times against Barcelona.

But was that due to the presence of Ronaldo? It could well have been and a Benzema with the freedom he finds himself with today could spell trouble for Barca's defence.
