Robert Lewandowski has been a man possessed this season.

The Polish hitman has been netting at will and flew past the 30 goal mark with his first-half strike against Freiburg.

The most terrifying thing about Lewandowski's prolific form in front of goal is that the Christmas turkey is yet to be carved - it may, in fact, still be walking around a paddock somewhere. The 31-year-old has been simply unplayable at times racking up silly numbers in the first half of the season.

He is possibly the most complete number nine in the world, with the ability to score from all angles and with any part of his body.

Bayern would eventually edge out a hard-fought 3-1 win thanks to two stoppage-time strikes from Serg Gnabry and Joshua Zirkzee.

It could prove to be a mightily valuable three points for the Bavarians, who find themselves embroiled in the battle of their life to retain the Bundesliga crown.

In fact, Bayern find themselves in very unfamiliar territory, sitting uncomfortably in third, four points off the summiteers, RB Leipzig.

While Lewa has been banging them in upfront, they simply haven't been able to keep them out at the back and may come to rue their defensive frailties later on in the season.

It feels like decades since Bayern were last bested in Germany and they may have to squeeze even more out of their deadly Pole if they are to restore their prestige as Germany's top team.

While there may not have been too much to celebrate in an indifferent season so far, Lewandoski's performances are at least cause for hope.

Despite his advancing age the Pole only seems to be getting better and may have to single-handedly drag Bayern to the title.

If the second half of the season is as potent as the first, his numbers could be simply meteoric by the time May 2020 rolls around.

Whether it will be enough to help Bayern retain their monopoly on the Bundesliga title though, remains to be seen.
