Of all the nonsensical things modern football has given us this season, Liverpool playing twice in two days has to be the most ludicrous.

The Reds' participation in the Club World Cup meant that after playing Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, they then had to play Monterrey on Wednesday.

Jurgen Klopp had little choice but to rest all his senior players for the first game and essentially throw the cup by fielding a team with an average age of 19.

Inevitably, Villa won the game 5-0 though some of Liverpool's youngsters did impress.

Even if he doesn't particularly value the competition, it must have been incredibly frustrating for Klopp.

It will have irked Liverpool fans too. Not only will they have been fighting for the remote two nights in a row, those fans who pride themselves on attending every game would have had to pick just one.

However, there are some rare cases of supporters who actually went to both.

The Daily Mail followed them - and there are only a handful of them - on their flight from Birmingham at six o'clock in the morning.

The two stadia are 3,329 miles apart but that didn't discourage the likes of David and Joanna Hills, who had already organised to go to the Middle East when they then learned of the Villa fixture date and had to rearrange so they could be at both - it was the first part of her 50th birthday celebrations.

Paul Hart and Mark Montgomery also made the trip in order to see Liverpool in the only competition they haven't seen them win.

Even Klopp himself didn't do both, instead leaving Neil Critchley in charge for the League Cup game and texting him at half-time to encourage the youngsters.

Several of them then flew out to watch Wednesday's semi-final, including Caoimhín Kelleher and Sepp van den Berg.

It takes a special level of dedication to even do one of these away days. Not many people fancy a cold, wet Tuesday night at Villa Park or a seven-hour trip to Doha, so a massive hats off to anyone who travelled to both.

It was all worth it, presumably, to see Roberto Firmino score that last-minute winner.
