It's been over a month since CM Punk made his shock return to WWE programming, as he made a surprise appearance on FOX Sports' studio show WWE Backstage.

The prospect of Punk working with FOX had been mooted for a while, but after weeks of Backstage being on the air it was thought that he wasn't to have a part in it after all.

Now he gets paid to talk about and criticise the WWE product to his hearts content, whilst not actually working for the company.

Punk has since left the door open to an in-ring return, but it's not something he's currently actively pursuing, and he's made it clear that WWE will have to approach him first.

His wife AJ Mendez - better known as AJ Lee in WWE circles - stepped away from the ring in 2015, just a year after Punk left, and since then has written books and appeared in the movie Rabid alongside her husband.

It doesn't look like she wants to wrestle again either, but Stephanie McMahon would be extremely interested in seeing both of them come back to WWE.

“I think Punk’s been pretty vocal that he’s not interested in an in-ring return right now,” McMahon told Alistair McGeorge of Metro.

“But for sure, that would be interesting. And I would love to see AJ Lee back in the women’s division. I think AJ Lee was an incredibly compelling character.”

“You know, I’m a big fan of AJ Lee’s, I really am. Some of our most interesting and intriguing storylines were with AJ, and I think she deserves as much credit as every other woman on our roster.”

Whilst Punk is the one that most fans want to see, don't underestimate AJ's popularity with WWE fans.

She was the shining talent in a women's division that was littered with 'divas' in 2013 and 2014, and she helped the start of the transformation with the hashtag #GiveDivasAChance in 2015, shortly before departing the business.

No doubt the WWE Universe will want to see her pit her wits against the current crop of females - Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks amongst others would all relish AJ returning.

It doesn't seem to be on her agenda just yet, but enough money would probably tempt the couple to return to the business.
