Arsenal fans have been given a glimpse into how their side might play under Mikel Arteta.
The Spaniard is returning to the club he spent five years at after agreeing to leave Manchester City.
It’s Arteta’s first managerial stint but there’s some excitement around what he’ll be like in charge of a team.
“He is already an incredible manager and he’ll have incredible success in his future,” Pep Guardiola said about Arteta earlier this year.
Arteta stood in for Guardiola when the Man City boss served a touchline ban for a Champions League game last season, but the side still played with Guardiola’s imprint.
But a video of Arteta delivering a coaching demonstration with the Welsh FA in 2017 might give us an idea of how he will set Arsenal up to play.
Standing in front of a projector that displayers players in different formations, the former midfielder explains his vision.
“These lines are here because I don't like creating lines between the wide players,” Arteta says.
“Why? Because the fullback passes to the wide player, like this. His back's to the ball, he can't progress the play.
“Someone hits his bum, he cannot play forward.
“When you are doing this, these angles you create, you are always receiving the ball like this.
“Normally they squeeze a little bit. From that moment he needs to know, I set the ball, I want to run from behind the wide players.”
Arteta will want some time to instil his style and get Arsenal playing the way he wants them to.
It will be interesting to see what he does with the defence, which has been consistently poor this season.
And he may be forced into a squad overhaul, with the Independent claiming that half the Arsenal squad is considering their future.
Star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is reportedly desperate to leave and Alexandre Lacazette and Granit Xhaka are also considering leaving.
As first managerial jobs go, Arteta’s is a tough one.
