Liverpool are officially champions of the world.
Jurgen Klopp’s men beat Flamengo 1-0 in extra time after Sadio Mane held the ball up before allowing Roberto Firmino to race into the box and score the only goal of the game with a cool finish.
That means the Reds are the first English side to have won the European Cup, the Super Cup, and the Club World Cup.
All of a sudden, the trip to Qatar seems worth every second.
The officiating was at times infuriating and things got particularly confusing right at the end of ordinary time when Mane thought he’d won a penalty, only for the referee to then overturn the decision with the help of VAR.
- Liverpool win Club World Cup after beating Flamengo
- VAR overturns referee’s Sadio Mane penalty decision
- Andy Robertson shouts ‘I’ll get him back’ to Mane
Yet it’s ultimately another trophy in the bank and one which allows Liverpool to call themselves the best team on the planet.
Klopp did not take it lightly at all and fielded his strongest possible side despite having had to battle with a number of injuries.
It was clear how much it meant to the players too, with Jordan Henderson perfecting his famous trophy lift.
Unfortunately, the moment wasn’t televised due to programme scheduling but it went down brilliantly among Liverpool fans on social media.
There’s a growing feeling that Henderson hasn’t been given enough respect as captain.
The former Sunderland midfielder might not be the most glamorous player or as inspirational a leader as his predecessor Steven Gerrard.
That shouldn’t take anything away from the fact that he led Liverpool to their sixth Champions League title and on current evidence, could well be leading them to their first league title in three decades by the end of the season.
Henderson thoroughly deserves to enjoy the moment.
