Report: Brock Lesnar's next challenger at Royal Rumble could be Kevin Owens or Randy Orton

Brock Lesnar and Randy Orton

As is normally the case when the end of a wrestling year rolls around, Brock Lesnar is nowhere to be seen on WWE programming.

After Survivor Series comes and goes, Lesnar regularly takes the rest of the year off, and returns around the time of the Royal Rumble such is his part-time schedule.

Last year he was the Universal Champion and he went on to face Finn Balor at WWE's huge January event, and a year on he's pretty much in the same scenario.

Lesnar captured the WWE Championship from Kofi Kingston in October, and has since had successful defences against Cain Velasquez and Rey Mysterio at Crown Jewel and Survivor Series respectively.

The Rumble is just around the corner though, and similarly to this time last year, there's no clear number-one contender.

Balor won the opportunity to face Lesnar last year after winning a Fatal Four-Way on Raw, and there's every chance WWE will go down the same route in early 2020.

Velasquez's name has cropped up again this past week, as the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that he was set to make his in-ring return at the Royal Rumble.

Brock Lesnar may end up fighting Cain Velasquez again at Royal Rumble

That could be against Lesnar or it could be his debut in the Rumble match itself, and if it's the latter, that leaves an open book as to who Brock's challenger could be.

And according to Cageside Seats' Rumor Roundup, that man could be either Kevin Owens or Randy Orton.

Both men seem to be feuding with other people at the minute - Seth Rollins and AJ Styles respectively - but if you need a babyface to take on Lesnar, there's probably no better two.

KO hasn't faced Lesnar before, so that is a fresh match that the WWE Universe will want to see, whilst the only match between Lesnar and Orton in 2016 ended by TKO after The Viper's head was split open by a Brock elbow.

Brock Lesnar and Randy Orton have only fought once - at SummerSlam 2016

Lesnar is not expected to lose his title at the Royal Rumble, and in weeks gone by it looks like Owens may be getting built up to be the top babyface on Monday nights.

So if it was between the two, logical booking would suggest Lesnar and Orton go at it again one more time for the WWE Title, Owens wins the Royal Rumble and faces Lesnar at WrestleMania 36.
