What an incredible decade of football we’ve just witnessed.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have dominated the sport, while we’ve also seen Leicester win the Premier League title at odds of 5000/1.

Manchester United have gone from Premier League champions to struggling to finish in the top-six, while Liverpool STILL haven’t won the league.

Meanwhile, Manchester City have spent a ridiculous amount of money.

But what can we expect to see in football next decade?

The 2020s will see the two greatest players to have ever played the game retire. But how else will the sport change?

Well, GIVEMESPORT have come up with 20 things we think will happen in the next ten years:

Liverpool finally win the Premier League

Just five months into next decade, Liverpool could finally win the Premier League title.

At the time of writing, they’re ten points clear at the top of the table and are heavy favourites to lift the trophy come May.

If it doesn't happen this season, it will surely happen at some point in the next ten years.

Steven Gerrard becomes Liverpool manager

Talking of Liverpool, we reckon Steven Gerrard will become their manager at some point in the next ten years.

Gerrard is currently doing well in his first managerial job at Rangers and, once Klopp wins the league with the Reds, he could step aside for club legend Gerrard.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo retire

This is a fairly obvious one but, when the day(s) come, it will be incredibly sad. At the end of the next decade, Ronaldo will be 44 and Messi will be 42.

They could probably both do a job on a football pitch at that age but it’s fairly certain that they will be enjoying retirement come 2030.

Cristiano Ronaldo becomes a film star

There’s simply no way Ronaldo will retire and keep a low-profile. The Portuguese superstar has already hinted that he’s interested in becoming a movie star.

Let’s just hope he improves on his appearances in THAT ‘Shopee’ advert.

Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. becomes a professional footballer

Ronaldo's son will be 19-years-old come 2030 and could follow in his father's footsteps. In truth, Cristiano Jr doesn't even need to be any good for clubs to take a chance on him. Just the interest it will generate alone would be beneficial. Will he win five Ballon d'Ors like his dad? Probably not. Will be half-decent at football? Almost definitely.

Kylian Mbappe wins 3 Ballon d’Ors

With Messi and Ronaldo out the way, there appears to be no stopping Kylian Mbappe from winning a Ballon d’Or - or three.

The 21-year-old is already ahead of Messi and Ronaldo in terms of goals scored at his age and is surely one of the favourites for the 2020 Ballon d’Or - and every single one after that until 2030.

Neymar becomes top international goalscorer ever

Ronaldo is currently chasing down Ali Daei in the all-time top international goalscoring chart, sitting just ten goals behind the Iranian.

Ronaldo may well beat that 109 goal record but Neymar is currently on 61. That means the PSG star needs another 48 goals.

Say the 27-year-old plays international football for another six years, that’s just eight goals each calendar year to reach Daei’s record.

To put that into context, Neymar scored 15 goals for Brazil in 2014.

The end of England’s Saturday 3pm blackout

It seems crazy that fans in England still can’t watch any Saturday 3pm match - especially when fans in every corner of the world can.

Amazon Prime have changed the game by allowing fans to watch any game they wish.

Surely that will come into force in the next ten years.

No more on-field officials

We’ve seen VAR introduced in football at the end of this decade and we think it’s only the start.

The role of the assistant referee has been undermined and on-field officials could be replaced altogether by the guys at Stockley Park.

We’re not quite sure exactly how it’ll work but officials could be making every call from a remote location in the future.

Transformation of the Champions League

There’s been talk about it for ages but the Champions League could finally be replaced by a new format.

UEFA want to make it a closed shop and could, effectively, turn it into a European Super League.

Xavi manages Barcelona

Like Gerrard at Liverpool, Xavi could return to Barcelona as a manager. The legendary midfielder played almost 800 times for Barca before his spell in Qatar.

The 39-year-old is currently in charge of Al Saad and could became the new Pep Guardiola at the Camp Nou.

Harry Kane becomes PL and England record goalscorer

Kane is currently thirteenth in the all-time Premier League goalscoring charts, 126 goals behind Alan Shearer’s 260 goal record.

It’s going to be close but if Kane stays in England until he’s 36 he will need to score, on average, 12 goals every season to beat Shearer.

You’d imagine Kane would score double that amount in the next three or four campaigns to give himself a head start.

Breaking Wayne Rooney’s all-time England goalscoring record will be a lot easier for Kane, who is only 21 goals away.

Man City win the Champions League

Despite dominating the Premier League in the last decade, City are still looking for their first-ever Champions League triumph.

Surely, it’ll happen in the next ten years with Pep Guardiola seemingly desperate to win it.

Footballer to come out as gay in the Premier League

The Premier League has attempted to combat homophobia in football with their rainbow laces campaign.

If there is a gay footballer in the Premier League, we really hope they feel safe enough to come out as gay whenever they’re ready.

After all, we’ll be in the 2020s, not the 1820s.

Celtic and Rangers to join the Premier League

We’re back to Celtic and Rangers dominating the Scottish Premiership so will we ever reach a stage where they enter the Premier League?

It’s unlikely but it could happen.

Where would they finish in the table? Top-four? Top-six? Mid-table? Or in a relegation battle?

Kick-ins replace throw-ins

We’re all for putting the ball down on the floor and resuming play as quickly as possible just like a five-a-side game.

It would result in the game being faster and the ball being in play for more time - which is surely a good thing.

A Premier League game will be played in a different continent

Now, this one is controversial.

A ‘39th game’ has been discussed in the past, while games like the Italian Super Cup being played in Saudi Arabia. While La Liga have been in discussions about holding a few of their matches in alternative counties.

A one-off Premier League game to be played in China, the USA or the Middle East wouldn’t go down well but we think it might happen.

A salary cap to be introduced

Wages are spiralling out of control with the likes of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez earning almost half a million pounds every week!

Will we see a salary cap introduced where clubs have a certain salary they need to stick to?

For example, Champions League clubs will have a certain amount per year to spend on wages, Europa League clubs a lesser amount and so on…

Jadon Sancho will return to Manchester City

Sancho left Man City for Borussia Dortmund in 2017 and has since taken the Bundesliga by storm.

But he’s starting to outgrow the German club and could be tempted with a return to City, where he would now surely command a place in the first-team.

Phil Foden will become England captain

What do the next ten years have in store for 19-year-old Phil Foden? Will he make a breakthrough at City? Probably eventually. But he's got more chance of being an England regular before a City regular and could be a future captain in the years to come. He's already got Premier League and Champions League experience, after all.

GIVEMESPORT's Rob Hoskin says: Will all of these 20 things happen in the next ten years? Probably not. But we definitely reckon there's a good chance of several of these incidents occurring. Ten years is an incredibly long time in football and it's hard to predict what will happen in a year's time, let alone a decade's time.

After all, who'd have guessed Leicester would win a league title this decade?

Off the pitch, football is constantly evolving with TV coverage and improving technology wanting to interfere with the sport.

We can't wait to see what the 2020s has in store for us.
