Trent Alexander-Arnold produced a remarkable individual performance to help Liverpool cruise to a 4-0 win away at Leicester City on Boxing Day.

The 21-year-old set up Roberto Firmino’s two goals, took the corner that led to James Milner’s penalty and then got himself on the scoresheet.

To produce this level of performance from right-back against the Premier League’s second-placed team was outstanding. This was an individual display that will be remembered for years to come.

Alexander-Arnold now has 20 assists in the Premier League since the start of last season - or 21, if you include the ‘assist’ for Milner’s penalty - which is more than any other player.

He was the name on every football fan’s lips at full-time - although he wasn’t the only right-back trending on social media after the match.

‘Dani Alves’ was also trending high in the United Kingdom.

The legendary Brazilian right-back, who is the most decorated footballer in history, was the subject of thousands of tweets also involving Alexander-Arnold.

Football writer David Cartlidge tweeted: “Haven’t enjoyed watching a full-back this much since prime Dani Alves. To generate this level of influence from that position is magnificent. Also, at Trent’s current age Dani Alves was nowhere near this level.”

On a similar theme, @jmemc55 tweeted: “Dani Alves at 21 had 2 goals and 1 assist for 6th place Sevilla. Trent is 21 and has already won the CL. 20 assists in 2019 from full back. We’re witnessing greatness whether you want to accept it or not.”

They weren’t the only ones keen to compare Alexander-Arnold with Alves following the England international’s latest masterclass…

However, others simply weren’t having it.

They believe Alexander-Arnold hasn’t done nearly enough to earn comparisons with arguably the greatest right-back of all time.

Alves sealed the 43rd trophy of his illustrious career when Brazil beat Peru in the Copa America final back in July.

Alexander-Arnold, who is 15 years younger than his South American counterpart, has won three trophies so far.

But if he continues playing like this, week-in, week-out for the next decade then we’ll be talking about Alexander-Arnold in the same breath as Alves and every other great full-back in football history.

It’s still very early days, of course, but everything Alexander-Arnold touches is turning to gold right now.

What a player.
