Peter Wright has beaten Michael van Gerwen at the Alexandra Palace to win his first Darts World Championship.Snakebite defeated The Green Machine by seven legs to three in what will go down as one of the greatest finals in Ally Pally history.Van Gerwen missed double 12 for a nine-darter in the tenth set, but he simply couldn't match the clinical finishing of Wright.The pair met for the second time in a final on the Ally Pally stage, with Van Gerwen winning their previous bout in 2014 - which was the Dutchman's first World Championship victory.Wright took the first set 3-2, with Van Gerwen having a shot at the bull for a 170-checkout before the Scotsman cleaned up on double top.

The 49-year-old followed up his impressive first set performance by taking the second 3-1, finishing on tops once again while boasting an average slightly over 105.

However, the Green Machine finally arrived on the biggest stage of all in the third set, winning 3-0 and taking the three legs in just 37 darts.

Van Gerwen was well and truly finding his rhythm, hitting 180s for fun as he clinched the fourth set 3-2 to level up an enthralling match.

But out of nowhere, Snakebite struck back with venom, keeping pace with his opponent and taking the fifth set to take a slender advantage again, before making it 4-2 in sets with a comprehensive 3-0 leg win in the sixth.

Van Gerwen was noticabely rocked, but he showed his elite mentality in the seventh to make it 4-3 in sets in what was already an Ally Pally classic.

And the eighth set was the definition of classic. With the score locked at two legs a piece, Wright held his nerve to clean up 50 to take himself within two sets of glory.

Both players appeared to acknowledge the significance of the ninth, with the tension and atmosphere building inside the arena.

Like so many before, the ninth came down to a nail-biting deciding leg and it was the most dramatic of the game.

Van Gerwen missed two darts at double top to take out 100 and Wright swept in to clean up 70, taking him within one set of the title.

The tenth kicked off in style, with Van Gerwen missing double 12 for a nine darter in the second leg.

But Wright held his nerve to break throw and then managed hold to secure his first ever world title - what a performance!
