Harry Maguire was rated three out of 10 by the Manchester Evening News following his performance in United’s 2-0 defeat to Arsenal on Wednesday.

None of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s players covered themselves in glory at the Emirates Stadium but Maguire was particularly poor.

“Maguire was again guilty of conceding imbecilic fouls and squandered another headed chance,” MEN wrote about the former Leicester City man.

“Needs to do more to justify his £80 million fee.”

That price tag made Maguire the most expensive defender in history and whether he likes it or not, it came with a certain level of expectation.

Has the England international met it? Well, he’s not exactly been a flop but when you consider how well Virgil van Dijk is performing for Liverpool, Man United supporters have a right to expect more.

He struggled against Arsenal and, unfortunately for him, now finds himself being mocked on Twitter.

A compilation video of Maguire’s display has been created by @BnsComps and, set to a wretched tune, it’s not a good look for 26-year-old.

From giving away possession to being turned inside out by Alexandre Lacazette, Maguire has certainly seen better days.

ANALYSIS

GiveMeSport’s Scott Wilson says:

Maguire is quite unfortunate that he’ll continue to be compared to Van Dijk, who cost Liverpool £5m less.

While Maguire is failing to match expectations for the Premier League’s fifth-placed team, Van Dijk is winning the Champions League and sitting next to Lionel Messi at the Ballon d’Or.

But the England centre-back should ignore the comparisons and forget about the price tag - his sole focus should be on helping Man United achieve their goals this season.

They are five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, into the semi-final of the League Cup and among the favourites to win the Europa League.

The season can still end on a high note for the Red Devils and if it finishes with silverware, Maguire can stick two fingers up to his critics.
