To be honest, there is something quite strange about the sight of Wayne Rooney in a Derby County shirt. It's one we're getting used to though, as the Rams haven't wasted a moment in mentioning they now have a former England captain in their ranks. The former Manchester United and Everton forward was handed the armband on Thursday night as he made his debut against Barnsley at Pride Park. Whatever you say about his fitness - and he is now 34 - there was always a sneaking suspicion he would still look a top player in the Championship. It didn't take his teammates too long to realise those suspicions were correct.

Derby took the lead on the stroke of half-time thanks to Rooney's inch-perfect free-kick, whipped into the box and into the feet of Jack Marriott.

Rooney had a phenomenal assist record in the top flight, setting up 103 goals. Only Ryan Giggs and Cesc Fabregas surpass him in the history books in that respect.

Elliott Simoes scored from close range to make it 1-1 five minutes into the second half after Ben Hamer had spilled the ball.

However, the hosts were soon back in front, with Rooney once again playing a key role.

The move began as he pinged the ball right the way across the pitch to find the advancing Andre Wisdom.

The full-back then played it in to Martyn Waghorn for what proved to be the winner - and his eighth of the season.

All in all, his stats were pretty impressive too:

Admittedly, Rooney's arrival hasn't gone down well in all quarters.

In fact, it's sparked a lot of controversy when he was handed the 32 shirt to help promote an online casino.

All that matters for Derby is his impact on the pitch and he showed that he still has something to offer.

Surely it won't be long before he scores his first goal for his new club.
