This year could be the year we finally see Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Tony Ferguson in the UFC.

It's a fight that has been booked and then cancelled on FOUR separate occasions, but finally, FINALLY, we will see the two collide on April 18 at UFC 249.

However, because of their controversial past and the fact we've been here numerous times before, it seems UFC have a plan B just in case.

What is that plan B? Well it's a certain Conor McGregor.

Speaking to ESPN in a recent interview, UFC president Dana White confirmed that plans are in place for McGregor to step in just in case something happens in the build-up to UFC 249.

White said: “Conor wants to fight three times this year.

“He's hoping that if he beats Cowboy, he can turn right around and fight Khabib, but that timing and math isn't going to work out.

“But you know Conor. Conor thinks the way Conor thinks.

“His thing is, I'll fight Cowboy, I'll beat Cowboy, and I'll be ready to fight Khabib at 155 if anything happens, because we're going into Khabib-Tony again.

So Conor would be ready for that fight.

McGregor can't look too far ahead, however, as he has his own fight to prepare for in a couple of weeks time.

The Irishman steps foot back into the Octagon for the first time since late 2018 as he takes on Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 on January 18.

He must first overcome the man who has the most wins in UFC history before he can focus on a Khabib rematch.

However, if something was to happen to Ferguson, or if the fight once again couldn't go ahead, it seems like Notorious will be 100% ready to step into the Octagon to save UFC and save the PPV.

If that is to be the case, UFC fans better hope he gets past Cerrone with minimal fuss.
