Manchester United are in desperate need of something new.

Supporters are currently signing a petition to have Ole Gunnar Solskjaer axed while their are numerous campaigns against the Glazers.

Meanwhile, what about the players? Paul Pogba’s exit seems imminent following a disastrous campaign while several players in the squad are underperforming.

The 2-0 defeat to Arsenal on Wednesday ensured a disappointing start to 2020 and left the Red Devils five points behind fifth-placed Chelsea.

There’s still a chance that United will finish in the top four, and they remain in three other competitions as well.

So the season shouldn’t be considered a disappointment just yet.

But in order to boost their chances of achieving their goals, Solskjaer would be wise to dip into the transfer market this month.

The opening of the window in January allows all Premier League clubs to do business and Man United will surely be one of the more active sides.

They’ve missed out on Erling Haaland, who joined Borussia Dortmund from RB Salzburg, but Rio Ferdinand has thrown up four names he wants to see his former club sign.

In a Twitter Q&A on Friday morning, Ferdinand named Napoli pair Kalidou Koulibaly and Fabian Ruiz and Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani as his ideal signings.

The six-time Premier League winner also suggested Boca Juniors’ teenage midfielder Agustin Almendra as a ‘wildcard’ addition.

Speaking about Cavani, Ferdinand wrote: “I would 100% go & get Edinson Cavani.

“Huge experience, Goalscorer, Work Ethic & Great Pro who the younger players in the squad would learn a lot from!”

United have been linked with Koulibaly for some time but opted to sign Harry Maguire last summer.

His club teammate Ruiz, 23, is a central midfielder who made his Spain debut last June.

The Independent reported this week that Solskjaer has prioritised signing an attacking midfielder this month, with Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish and Leicester City’s James Maddison at the top of his wishlist.
