"January, 3rd, remember the date."

So goes the chant that can still be heard in Leeds circles from time to time, 10 years on.

The FA Cup is back this weekend and Marcelo Bielsa's men once again find themselves trying to engineer an upset against a top-flight side as they face Arsenal.

However, they head to the Emirates safe in the knowledge they will never be able to upstage Jermaine Beckford and co., who beat arch-rivals Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford a decade ago.

It was a classic cup fairytale, Beckford being the son of a United fan.

The same could be said of several Leeds players, he recalls.

Sir Alex Ferguson was shell-shocked as Beckford scored the only goal of the game and his United side were knocked out in the third round in his tenure - and also the first time his team had been upset by a team from the lower leagues.

The legendary Scotsman, who won the competition five times between 1990 and 2004, couldn't contain his rage after the final whistle, as the former Leeds striker has recalled in the Daily Mail.

"After the game, a couple of the boys had family who were Manchester United fans," he said.

"They tried to get a couple of shirts from their players and Alex Ferguson said, 'Absolutely not, under no circumstances are you giving any of them your shirts'."

Priceless.

The result are as a shock to the watching world, but Beckford admits now that he was always confident Leeds could pull off a surprise.

When asked what he thought looking at the United players - including the likes of Gary Neville, Wayne Rooney, and Dimitar Berbatov - in the tunnel, he responded:

"That’s easy – we’re going to beat these guys.’

"Before every game I used to go into town and get a vibe of the energy of the city and hear their thoughts on the upcoming game.

"Everybody gave me so much encouragement and at the same time let me know this isn’t what you’re used to.

"'This is a big deal, a big rivalry, give it everything you’ve got.'"

After Ole Gunnar Solskjaer received criticism for his jovial attitude following the 2-0 defeat to Arsenal on New Year's Day, perhaps United could do with more of Ferguson's attitude in the current set-up.

Their current boss has no easy task ahead of him either as the Red Devils travel to Wolves in the third round.
