The 20 most overpaid players in the Premier League this season

There’s no doubt about it, professional footballers get paid obscene amounts of money.

Imagine the thought of pocketing almost half a million pounds every week. That's the reality for some players at the very top of the game.

It really has got out of control.

But some players deserve that money more than others.

If you’re scoring goals every week and winning trophies, you might deserve the £150,000-per-week.

But many players simply aren’t doing enough to earn millions and millions every year.

Therefore, with data obtained from Spotrac, GIVEMESPORT have identified 20 players in the Premier League that are being overpaid this season.

We’ve taken into account the actual wage as well as the contribution they’ve made in the Premier League this campaign.

20 | Bernard - £120,000-per-week

The Everton winger isn’t a bad player by any means. But he probably should be doing more considering he’s one of the club highest earners.

He’s only started eight times this season but has at least scored twice and produced one assist.

19 | Fred - £120,000-per-week

Fred has definitely shown signs of improvement this season but is he still doing enough for his £120,000-per-week wages? Probably not.

Fourteen starts, no goals, no assist and very few decent performances.

18 | Andriy Yarmolenko - £115,000-per-week

Andriy Yarmolenko is about as inconsistent as you can get.

He’s scored three times this season but has often gone missing recently during West Ham’s disappointing campaign to date.

The Ukrainian is currently nine games without a goal but has now picked up an injury.

17 | Andreas Christensen - £80,000-per-week

The 23-year-old has a bright future ahead of him and started Chelsea’s season at centre-back.

He’s now the club’s fourth-choice defender but is still picking up a lovely wage packet despite sitting on the bench.

16 | Morgan Schneiderlin - £100,000-per-week

Morgan Schneiderlin has been left out Everton’s last five matchday squads and that pretty much sums it up.

The 30-year-old lacks mobility but it remains to be seen whether Carlo Ancelotti will bring him back to the fold.

15 | Juan Mata - £160,000-per-week

The 31-year-old has had a very good career but he probably should be contributing more considering his £160,000-per-week wages - especially in this poor Manchester United side.

He’s started just one league game since the start of October and is yet to register a goal or assist in 12 Premier League games.

14 | Tanguy Ndombele - £200,000-per-week

There’s no doubt the Spurs club-record signing is a quality player but he hasn’t exactly repaid his £55 million fee.

Jose Mourinho has already called the midfielder out for being injured with the Frenchmen only appearing in 14 Premier League games this season.

13 | Nemanja Matic - £120,000-per-week

Despite starting United’s previous two matches, the 31-year-old is past his best now.

The Serb has missed nine matches through injury and lacks the mobility United desperately need in midfield right now.

12 | Jesse Lingard - £75,000-per-week

No Premier League goals or assists in 2019. Need we say any more?

11 | Jack Wilshere - £100,000-per-week

Unfortunately, injuries have struck Jack Wilshere once again this season.

He’s played just 175 minutes of Premier League football this season but is still picking up a cool £100,000 every week.

10 | Mesut Ozil - £268,750-per-week

Mesut Ozil has actually started 10 of Arsenal’s previous 11 Premier League fixtures and has shown glimpses of his undoubted quality.

9 | Luke Shaw - £120,000-per-week

Man Utd’s left-back is seriously struggling this season. He missed 10 matches with a hamstring injury during October and November, starting eight times in total in 2019/20.

But since returning, he looks a shadow of the player he used to be before that horrific leg break back in 2015.

8 | Mamadou Sakho - £100,000-per-week

Remember when Sakho was Liverpool’s best defender? It seems a very long time ago now.

The Frenchman is currently struggling to get in Crystal Palace’s side, starting just six matches this season.

7 | Marcos Rojo - £80,000-per-week

120 minutes played in the Premier League for Rojo this season. He did, however, play 90 minutes during United’s 1-1 draw vs Liverpool - the only match in which Liverpool have failed to win this season in the league.

Hasn’t even made the squad in the last nine matchdays.

6 | Shkodran Mustafi - £90,000-per-week

Shkodran Mustafi just isn’t very good, is he?

The defender has started just once in the league for Arsenal this season - during the 2-2 draw with Norwich.

5 | Paul Pogba - £290,000-per-week

Almost £300,000-per-week for a player that has made just seven appearances in the Premier League this season.

Paul Pogba registered two assists in the opening fixture against Chelsea but he hasn’t made a goal contribution since as he’s struggled with injuries.

United could well be getting him off their books soon enough...

4 | Max Meyer - £125,000-per-week

Max Meyer’s agent deserves a medal for agreeing a contract worth £125,000-per-week at Selhurst Park.

The German has started just five times this season with very little return for Crystal Palace.

3 | Nathaniel Clyne - £70,000-per-week

Yes, Nathaniel Clyne is still a Liverpool player...of sorts.

The right-back has struggled massively with injuries but he hasn’t played in the league since 29 December 2018 - when he came on for seven minutes during his side’s 5-1 victory over Arsenal.

Liverpool are probably looking forward to getting him off the wage bill.
