James Maddison is quickly becoming one of the finest attacking midfielders in the Premier League.Actually, scratch that, the Leicester man is already comfortably one of the finest playmakers in the higher echelons of English football. The former Norwich City man enjoyed a brilliant debut season in the top-flight in 2018/19, but he has really come into his own in 2019/20.In 20 Premier League games this season, Maddison has scored six times and assisted three more, establishing a telepathic understanding with the prolific Jamie Vardy. It's no wonder that Manchester United have been heavily linked the 23-year-old this January transfer window, but Maddison certainly won't come cheap.

However, the Mirror report that the Red Devils are preparing an offer which they think could tempt Leicester - but to most it will look like a stinker of an offer.

United will propose a package of £45m for Maddison plus Jesse Lingard to the Foxes. So basically, they're offering just £45m for the Leicester man...

Incredibly, the Mirror's report states that United value Lingard at £40m, which is laughable for a 27-year-old midfielder who failed to score or assist in the Premier League in 2019.

As expected, the reaction to the news was that of hilarity and below we've provided some of the best tweets.

The Red Devils are apparently resigned to the fact that Maddison will not be on the move in January due to Leicester's fine form.

They are also aware that it may be difficult to sign him in the summer, with the midfielder desperate to play Champions League football as soon as possible.

Right now, Leicester are in a far healthier position than United to seal passage to Europe's premiere competition.

However, the ace card United hold is that they're prepared to treble Maddison's current wage of £55,000-a-week.

Leicester will not be able to match that, due to the fact that they only currently pay Vardy - their top earner - £140,000-a-week.
