Football fans so often reminisce about the 90s. It was a bygone era which began with one of the greatest World Cups of all time in Italy, and which was dominated by legends such as Paolo Maldini, Marco van Basten and Zinedine Zidane. A generation has come and gone since then, but remarkably, there are still a number of their contemporaries who are still playing. Zlatan Ibrahimovic has just started a new (well, sort of new) chapter in his career by re-signing for AC Milan. There are also a number of stoppers still to be found between the sticks who made their debuts in the 1990s, though that is perhaps slightly less remarkable as goalkeepers tend to go on longer.

Regardless, as we enter a new decade, it's still remarkable to think there are a number of top players who are still featuring - many of them in the top five European leagues - in a fourth consecutive decade.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Ibrahimovic is back in Serie A at the age of 38. The former Sweden international has done it all in his 21-year career - except for the remarkable fact that despite having played for six clubs who have won the Champions League, he's never actually lifted the trophy himself. Unfortunately, that's unlikely to change now, with Milan currently serving a one-year ban from European football and unlikely to make the elite competition next season.

Gianluigi Buffon

While impressive that Buffon is still at Juventus - after a brief stint at PSG - the sad truth is those gloves really need hanging up now. Anyone who has watched the veteran in the last couple of seasons will have witnessed a string of errors unbefitting of the World Cup winner.

Iker Casillas

The Real Madrid legend has been at Porto since 2015 and is still officially on their books. That's despite suffering a heart attack in May and being rushed to hospital during a training session. In the aftermath, he was forced to deny reports that he had retired.

Claudio Pizarro

The Werder Bremen striker is now 41 and is in the midst of his 12th consecutive season in the Bundesliga, the league where he has spent the vast majority of his career notwithstanding his start in Peru and a short, underwhelming stint at Chelsea.

Roque Santa Cruz

There aren't many players who can say they played for Real Madrid and Blackburn Rovers in their career, quite a niche achievement admittedly. The striker is still playing for Olimpia in his native Paraguay.

Gareth Barry

The former England international is obviously in the twilight of his career but West Bromwich Albion have decided to sign him up again until the end of the season; his initial contract had expired in the summer and he was training with the club to recover from an injury. If the Baggies keep up their promotion push, perhaps Barry could even get an extension and be seen in the Premier League again.

Artur Boruc

The Polish goalkeeper is still at Bournemouth, though he is right down the pecking order. Boruc's career has been somewhat underrated - he's won nine major honours, which is more than many achieve.

Shunsuke Nakamura

Speaking of Celtic legends, even the most ardent devotees of Shunsuke Nakamura and his iconic free-kick against Manchester United in the Champions League might not have realised he was still playing with Yokohama FC.

Maxi Rodriguez

The winger has spent three different stints at boyhood club Newell's Old Boys, though he gained more attention at Espanyol, Atletico Madrid and subsequently, Liverpool. While he was far from a massive hit at Anfield, the 39-year-old is still doing a job in his native Argentina.

Aritz Aduriz

Aduriz is indeed playing into his fourth decade and got his 21st season off to an incredible start when he scored the only goal of the game on the opening night of the campaign - it was a stunning scissor-kick in the dying minutes as Athletic Bilbao caused a massive upset by beating Barcelona.

All of the above first graced the pitch in the 1990s. It might not sound that long ago, but the year 2050 is now as close as the last time Liverpool won the league - let that sink in for a moment.

Some, like Ibrahimovic, are rare breeds who can still perform at the highest level in spite of their age.

It's a remarkable physical achievement.
