Is Jesse Lingard a scapegoat or a symptom of Manchester United's problems?

To be fair to the 27-year-old, he has had an incredibly difficult spell in his personal life to contend with on top of his professional struggles.

Lingard is far from the only player underperforming at United, but he has also been criticised in the past for not taking his career seriously enough.

From his inappropriate social media posts to his on-field dances, the midfielder has often seemed like he's at Old Trafford for a good time, not for a long time.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has warned him to that effect and according to some reports, the club have appeared to give up on him altogether by offering him to Leicester as part of a deal for James Maddison.

All Lingard has ostensibly contributed this season is one goal in the Europa League against Astana.

The England international had a disastrous 2019, failing to record a single league goal or assist in the entire calendar year.

Maybe 2020 will represent a new start - but it's going to take a long time for him to live that stat down regardless.

In the meantime, fans in their thousands have been circulating a fake 'compilation' video of his goals and assists.

The internet really is a cruel place.

The New Year did not get off to an ideal start for him either, as he was hauled off after less than an hour in the 2-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates.

On a ground where he once created one of his most infamous celebrations, his demise was epitomised as he had just one shot, which was easily blocked.

A quarter of his passes were intercepted and he has now played 29 Premier League games since he was last involved in a goal.

Solskjaer has a massive job on his hands to revive Lingard's form, if indeed he keeps him at United at all.
