WWE has begun the year 2020 with Shinsuke Nakamura as the Intercontinental Champion, but there's a strong chance he still won't be the champion by the time WrestleMania comes around.

The Intercontinental Championship has become a bit of a forgotten title in WWE, even with the redesign of the title back in November.

An example of its under usage in WWE is that since winning the title at Extreme Rules back in July, Nakamura has only defended the Intercontinental title three times on WWE TV.

The last TV title defense of the Intercontinental Championship came all the way back in October when The King of Strong Style defended the title against Roman Reigns, retaining the title via DQ finish.

In 2020, the Intercontinental title needs to be rejuvenated and shown the respect it deserves since it is one of the most prestigious titles in the WWE.

Let's take a look and predict who the next five Intercontinental Champions could be in order to help the title return to its former glory.

Braun Strowman

It looks like Braun Strowman will be the man that challenges Nakamura for the Intercontinental title at the Royal Rumble as the two are currently feuding on SmackDown.

The Monster Among Men needs to win at the Rumble in order to rejuvenate the title and get the title off to a strong start in the new year with a new champion, as well as finally pick up his first singles title in WWE.

Nakamura and Strowman can keep feuding after the Rumble, but another superstar should be picking up the title before WrestleMania comes around.

Cesaro

It wouldn't be surprising to see Cesaro capture the Intercontinental Championship since he's going through his own rejuvenation over the past few weeks while teaming with Nakamura.

The Swiss Cyborg could pick up the title at the Elimination Chamber in a triple threat match between himself, Strowman and Nakamura, pulling a fast one on The King of Strong Style in order to win the title.

This, in turn, would not only break up Nakamura and Cesaro, but also keep The Monster Among Men looking strong heading into WWE's biggest show of the year, WrestleMania.

Sheamus

The only title Sheamus needs to win in order to become a Grand Slam Champion is the Intercontinental Championship, and that should happen at WrestleMania.

The Celtic Warrior has only just returned to WWE on SmackDown this past week and will likely have a strong WrestleMania season in order to build himself up as one of the top heels in the blue brands midcard.

It would be great to see him go one-on-one with Cesaro and beat him. The two have put on great matches in the past and it would be a fitting way to close the book on their past together as The Bar.

John Morrison

WWE knows John Morrisson can be a great Intercontinental Champion as he's won the title three times before, so there's no reason why he can't win the title again in 2020.

Sheamus is the perfect kind of heel to add value back to the Intercontinental title, so Morrison shouldn't be getting his hands on the title itself until closer to, but not at, SummerSlam.

Morrison and Sheamus can feud over the title for several months with The Celtic Warrior winning the match in heelish ways, before having a deciding match at Extreme Rules under a No Disqualification stipulation.

Mustafa Ali

Mustafa Ali has the potential to be a top babyface on SmackDown, as proven by how fans have reacted to him ever since he started to breakout on the blue brand in early 2019.

The high-flying offense of both Morrison and Ali would create fantastic matches that will reenergise fan's interest further into the Intercontinental Championship at SummerSlam and beyond.

Morrison could even turn heel on Ali at the end of their SummerSlam match in order to extend their feud, as well as help elevate Ali's status on SmackDown as one of the shows top babyfaces.
