Drew McIntyre is still regarded by many as the future in WWE, and 2020 could finally be the year in which he becomes the top superstar in the entire company.

With WrestleMania season fast approaching, now is the perfect time for WWE to start getting behind McIntyre and push him towards the top.

The perfect spot to start this ascension is just around the corner as well, as the Royal Rumble will take place at the end of this month on January 26.

As of writing, Roman Reigns is the current favourite to win the men's Royal Rumble match, and he'll probably go on to challenge fellow SmackDown superstar Bray Wyatt for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania.

However, The Big Dog doesn't need to win another Rumble to be in that spot, so here's why The Scottish Psychopath should be the superstar to win the men's Royal Rumble match.

WWE is protecting him already

Take a look at who McIntyre has faced on Raw over the past couple of weeks since Survivor Series to see just how much WWE is protecting him.

He lost a United States number one contendership match, but then won vs Akira Tozawa, Matt Hardy, Zack Ryder, and Curt Hawkins and Ryder in a 2-on-1 handicap match in quick fashion.

Is WWE already protecting The Scottish Psychopath for a big spot at the Rumble? It sure looks that way, but they should go one better and have him win the match and become a number one contender for a world title at WrestleMania.

He's yet to win the WWE or Universal title

In both of his spells with WWE, McIntyre has never won a world title, whether that be the WWE title, the Universal title, or the old World Heavyweight Championship.

That ought to change in 2020 and a great way to kick that off would be with a Royal Rumble win. He has the size, charisma, in-ring skills and mic work to be a success on the main event stage and he can put on quality matches in the ring.

The Scottish Psychopath's rise to the top at this year's Showcase of Immortals will also be another great WrestleMania story that can be told for years to come and be looked back on with fondness by WWE fans.

Great challenger for Brock Lesnar or Bray Wyatt

There's every chance WWE does another Superstar Shakeup in the weeks following WrestleMania, meaning any Raw, SmackDown or NXT superstar could be on a different brand after the big show.

McIntyre has never had a one-on-one feud with either Brock Lesnar or Bray Wyatt, so him winning the Royal Rumble would produce a nice fresh storyline for WWE fans to salivate over for the main event of WrestleMania.

The Scottish Psychopath is a great talker as well, so he would be able to hold his own vs Wyatt or Paul Heyman in the feuds too, and put on a great performance with The Fiend or Lesnar inside the squared circle.

2020 could be McIntyre's year in WWE, and it all could start with a win in the men's Royal Rumble match.
