We're now one week into the January transfer window.

As is often the case, not too many big deals have been completed and that strange opening to 2011, which saw both Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez move, continues to look anomalous.

But the absence of any life-changing transfers hasn't stopped the team at the CIES Football Observatory from casting their mind to top players and how much they'd sell for.

That's because they've revealed the 166 players across Europe's top five leagues that they have calculated to have a transfer value in excess of €50 million.

Similarly to Transfermarkt, they go into incredible detail with their estimates and you can check out the four-page document they've attached if you're intrigued about the method.

World's most valuable footballers

But that aside, we've decided to go straight to the top of the list and count down the 25 players who would cost football clubs the most if they wanted to sign them in 2020.

Some notable absentees include: Virgil van Dijk (29th), Eden Hazard (32nd), Alisson Becker (34th), Robert Lewandowski (36th), Paul Pogba (48th) and Cristiano Ronaldo (49th).

GIVEMESPORT's Kobe Tong says

First things first, I'm not going to dispute the calculations of CIES - albeit estimates, obviously - because their objective methods are far more complex than anything I could construct.

But once I get that disclaimer out the way, you know the market is slightly broken when Rashford is finding himself in seventh place.

The Manchester United forward gets a bad rap, but even in his most prolific season yet - 16 goals in 28 games - he isn't pulling up trees to be considered one of the world's best number nines.

If anything, it's probably proof of CIES' accuracy because young, English players are often the most overrated demographic in the transfer window.

That aside, there can be no arguing with Mbappe in first place when you consider he's a Ballon d'Or contender and World Cup winner before his 22nd birthday.

History only remembers the winners and this won't be the only list that Mbappe finishes top of during the year and decade, I'll tell you that for a fact.
