Manchester United's Jesse Lingard was panned for his performance against Manchester City on Tuesday night. The Red Devils were absolutely woeful during the first-half of their Carabao Cup semi-final, falling 3-0 down after strikes from Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez and an Andreas Pereira own goal.Things slightly improved after the break with Marcus Rashford bagging a consolation goal, but United face a near-impossible challenge ahead of the second leg at the Etihad Stadium. And amidst the chaos of that dire opening 45 minutes, Lingard dropped one of his worst displays of the season and was hooked off for Nemanja Matic during the interval. It's never a good sign when an attacking midfielder is being substituted for a defensive one and Matic actually went on to become one of United's best performers on the night.

A bad evening for Lingard

It was the latest hitch in what has been a terrible season for Lingard.

The 27-year-old made headlines for failing to score a single goal, nor provide an assist, in the Premier League throughout 2019 and nothing seems to have changed for 2020.

Lingard has only found the net once this campaign, during the damning 2-1 Europa League defeat to Astana, and a move away to AC Milan has been mooted after linking up with Mino Raiola.

Damning Bernardo Silva stat

And a departure from Manchester looks even more likely after yet another dreadful statistic emerged about the former England international.

As previously mentioned, Silva was one of the City players to score during the game and that proved his second strike at Old Trafford in the space of nine months.

Astonishingly, that therefore means that Silva has scored more goals in two games at the 'Theatre of Dreams' than Lingard has managed in the last two seasons. Yes, we aren't kidding.

Lingard's second-to-last goal at Old Trafford came on February 25, 2018, which is now more than 23 months ago and only a strike against Arsenal came within either 2018/19 or 2019/20.

GIVEMESPORT's Kobe Tong says

Look, Lingard has become something of a social media punching bag in recent months, but there's no denying that these stats aren't good enough.

Serious questions have to be raised about Lingard's performance levels, even if it has to be acknowledged that family issues have curtailed his progress.

However, where do you draw the line when you have an attacking player who isn't score nor providing goals in an entire calendar year? It simply subpar for a United player.

There's still a top, top player inside Lingard, but he's been given more than enough chances to show that at United.

His remaining days at the club will soon become as minuscule as his goal tally.
