Manchester United's Phil Jones can't seem to go a single game without becoming a meme.Believe it or not, there was a time where Sir Alex Ferguson believed Jones could be remembered as a club legend and the Englishman actually started pretty well under the iconic coach. However, there were still the early signs of defensive clangers even then, which have since been commonplace during the reigns of Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.Spoiler alert: the latest one of them came during the Manchester Derby on Tuesday night - naturally, United lost 3-1 - but more on that later. So, in celebration(?) of Jones' often amusing style of defending, we've decided to countdown 17 of the most calamitous moments to grace his career at Old Trafford.

16 calamitous Jones moments

There's no doubting that Jones can be a top-level defender on his day, but there were just too many infamous examples for us to resist - check out our breakdown below:

1. Newcastle United own goal

The first in a long line of own goals for Jones. This terrible moment of miscommunication with David de Gea put Newcastle 3-0 up as he woefully headed into the ground and his own net.

2. Flying over the advertising boards

It happens to the best of footballers, but we can't help guiltily chuckling when we see Jones sprawling over the United hoardings against West Brom.

3. Face of despair vs Man City

Rumour has it that Jones has 30 more facial muscles than the average human and you certainly wouldn't doubt it judging by his expression when Sergio Aguero scored at Old Trafford in 2013.

4. Sunderland missed penalty

There's missing a penalty and then there's missing a penalty. We would joke that Jones sent this strike into the stratosphere, but it actually appeared to hit a United supporter smack in the face.

5. Headed tackle vs Arsenal

The slow-motion footage of Jones crawling across the pitch remains comedy gold, even if this was technically some phenomenal - as opposed to calamitous - defending against Arsenal.

6. Taking corners vs QPR

Van Gaal has patented some off-the-wall tactics during his time in football, but few images look as bizarre as Jones getting ready to whip a corner into the penalty area. Mental.

7. Wiping out Jordan Henderson

Sometimes Jones' defending is just inexplicable and we still have no idea how he avoided a red card for deciding: 'ah, bugger it, I'm just going to wipe the lad out.'

8. Disallowed Chelsea own goal

Just because the match officials chalked this worldie out of the history books, it doesn't mean we're going to ignore the moment Jones scored arguably his greatest ever own 'goal.'

9. Tottenham Hotspur own goal

But fear not, Jones would score another own goal later that season and his decision to rest his head solemnly against the stanchion was almost as funny as the gaffe itself.

10. Face-plant at West Ham

Some say Jones is actually a synonym for 'clumsy' and you wouldn't question it when you saw the United defender fall flat on his face after catching his boot on some fake turf. Dearie me.

11. Derby County missed penalty

The fact Jose Mourinho said he knew United 'were in trouble' when Jones was taking this penalty says it all as the Englishman couldn't convert from 12 yards once again.

12. Valencia own goal

Sergio Romero must have found out how De Gea was feeling all those years ago in Newcastle when Jones made a brilliant run in behind and slide-tackled the ball into his own net.

13. Friction burn vs Reading

Similar to the West Ham incident, photographs appeared to show that Jones had suffered friction burns on his forehead and cheek after face-planting in this FA Cup clash.

14. Gurn during Wolves goal

We've already seen one spectacular face from Jones on this list, but nothing compares to seeing Jones' reaction to this Wolves goal in slow motion and set to operatic music.

15. Attempting a bicycle kick

If you thought Jones taking a corner was bizarre, then you haven't seen him attempting a bicycle kick and it ended exactly how you'd imagine: he volleyed it against his own arm.

16. Sheffield United mistake

We can't tell if this defensive error was break dancing or a gymnastic floor routine, but it was enough to see him hooked off at half-time by Solskjaer regardless.

17. Floored by Kevin De Bruyne

Ah, the moment that inspired this list. There was concern amongst United fans when Jones was given the nod this week and they were justified when De Bruyne put his limbs in a tangle.

GIVEMESPORT's Kobe Tong says

Look, I'll be the first person to admit that most of these moments are pure fun and you've got to credit Jones for taking it all in his stride.

“It’s banter, my mates banter me all the time about it,” Jones said in an interview with Goal earlier this year. “It is what it is. I’m not too fussed about that either."

You've got to tip your hat to someone who doesn't mind his mates sending amusing photographs of his face into WhatsApp groups every night.

But... there are some serious instances which really raises questions about why United have handed the 27-year-old a contract that runs until 2023.

We're probably harsher on Jones because of the meme culture, but that can't take away from the fact he's dropping defensive clangers in almost every United appearance he makes.

There's only so long that United can humour Jones as much as he does the jokes.
