Ben Stokes heart-warming hand gesture directed at injured father

South Africa v England - 2nd Test: Day 5

Much like Kieran Trippier in 2018, Ben Stokes can now be regarded as an iconic individual who provided this country with some unforgettable sporting moments.

It could also be argued that the BBC Sports Personality of the Year victor has helped change the face of cricket within this country thanks to his performances last summer in the Cricket World Cup and the Ashes.

Nevertheless, despite winning the hearts of men and women up and down the country, it's evident to see that Stokes still has time for his family back in New Zealand.

Within multiple photos, and most notably, the England Cricket Twitter account's most recent post, Stokes makes a gesture with his hand which involves folding over his middle finger.

However, it turns out there's a sentimental and simply heart-warming reason behind this sign.

"Stokes makes this sign for his dad who chopped off part of his middle finger so he could continue playing rugby league as he couldn’t afford to stop for an operation. Ged is currently in a Jo’burg hospital," the Independent's sport feature writer Vithushan Ehantharajah confirmed.

Despite his successes on the pitch, it's been a difficult few months for Stokes and his family due to the spotlight The Sun had placed on their family.

The England cricketer pursued legal action on the tabloid newspaper for a breach of privacy after bringing up events from over 30 years ago.

Nevertheless, Stokes was widely supported online by fans and professionals alike during this ordeal and it's certainly fair to say that the notoriously-incredible England batsman is respected and loved by the masses.

Stokes continued his summer performances in similar vein in England's most recent Test against South Africa, taking the final three wickets to secure victory.

In a truly impressive summer and year for Stokes, the batsman has certainly established himself as a 'once in a generation cricketer', as the England Cricket Twitter account so accurately stated.
