Ever since his arrival at Liverpool in 2011 for £20 million, Jordan Henderson has had to compete with comparisons to the legendary Steven Gerrard. The midfielder was touted as Gerrard’s long-term replacement but, when his performances didn’t live up to expectations, he soon became a scapegoat in a struggling Liverpool side.Just a year after joining, manager Roy Hodgson desperately tried to swap him for Fulham’s Clint Dempsey. The move fell through and Henderson pledged to fight for his Liverpool future.Three years later, he was made captain after Gerrard’s departure. It didn’t help curb the fans’ expectations of him. Why wasn’t Henderson running about the pitch like Gerrard, screaming at his teammates like Gerrard and scoring 20 goals a season like Gerrard?

Because he’s not Gerrard and as soon as fans started to realise that, they’ve really began to appreciate Henderson for what he does do.

Henderson may not have the quality of Gerrard but that doesn’t mean he’s not a quality footballer.

He's imperative to this Klopp side. Whether it's in the No.8 role or the No.6, he leaves everything he's got on the pitch every single match. He'll run for 90 minutes, his passing range is massively underrated and he's a proper leader.

He’s now been Liverpool captain for more than four years and has recently lifted the Champions League, Super Cup and World Club Championship.

He is the captain of the world champions and he's even got his very own signature trophy lift.

And now, the manager of the team Liverpool played in the final of the World Club Cup - Flamengo - thinks he’s the best in the world in his position.

“Henderson is the best midfielder in the world in his position,” Jorge Jesus said.

“[Jurgen Klopp] never drops him, but the two offensive midfielders, [Naby] Keita and [Georginio] Wijnaldum, sometimes are replaced.

“The other players are always the same.”

There are some fans out there that still don’t rate Henderson.

But Jurgen Klopp has a message for those haters.

"If anybody who is with us still doesn't see the quality of Jordan Henderson, then I cannot help them," Klopp said.

"Is Hendo the perfect football player? No. Do I know anybody who is? No. But is he is unbelievably important to us? Yes."
