Eric Cantona, the Manchester United legend, has labeled manager Sir Alex Ferguson as a ‘genius’.

The Scot brought Cantona to Old Trafford in 1992, where the Frenchman helped United to four league titles, including United’s first for 26 years in his first season.

And on the eve of the club’s meeting with archrivals Liverpool, the 44-year-old has some fond words for the manager soon to celebrate 25 years at the helm.

“In this generation, it is even more different than in others, because the world has changed. It is a virtual world.

“So it is even more difficult for managers but he can do it very well. It is not so easy to adapt to all generations every time, but he can see them because he works with all generations. He is a kind of genius.”

Cantona is currently the director of soccer at New York Cosmos, and has been highly tipped to take over from Ferguson, when the 69-year-old eventually retires.

He admits that the reason behind the manager’s long stand at United is simply down to his emotional state.

“He is a great psychologist. He is very passionate [about] the game. But maybe sometimes he can take [his] distance. Of course he is a great tactician, a great manager. But he is a great cyclone.”
