The last decade was quite a monumental one in the history of football.Countless memorable moments and ridiculous transfer fees were just the tip of the iceberg in what was an iconic 10 years. But who were the key players that defined Europe's top five leagues during the decade?Don't worry, we've got you covered. Thanks to WhoScored, we've provided the top player from each division based purely on stats. There are some predictable winners, as well as a few surprises.

Premier League - Eden Hazard

Okay, no surprise here as Hazard fends off Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane and David Silva to reign supreme in the Premier League.

In 245 games for Chelsea, the brilliant Belgian scored 85 goals, provided 54 assists and completed an unprecedented 909 dribbles.

Hazard really could do it all and will forever retain his legendary status in English football.

La Liga - Lionel Messi (8.65)

The 2010s belonged to Messi and he also earns the highest overall rating - by far.

His grading of 8.65 is absolutely outrageous, but that's what you get when you score 369 goals and assist another 136 in just 343 league games for Barcelona.

La Liga really is Messi's playground.

Serie A - Giorgio Chiellini (7.38)

One of the greatest defenders of the modern era.

Even the attacking might of Paulo Dybala, Papu Gomez and Gonzalo Higuain could not displace the Juventus Goliath from top spot in Serie A.

Can a 35-year-old Chiellini continue his brilliance in 2020 when he returns from injury?

Bundesliga - Arjen Robben (7.71)

The Dutchman edges just ahead of ex-teammates Franck Ribery and Robert Lewandowski.

Robben scored 95 goals and provided 50 assists in his 195 Bundesliga outings for Bayern Munich, a stunning return for an out-and-out winger.

That left foot belongs in a museum.

Ligue 1 - Thiago Silva (7.35)

Amazingly, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar don't make Ligue 1's top five!

Instead, it's club captain Silva leading the way, with Edinson Cavani in second and fellow PSG teammate Marco Verratti in fifth.

Silva's signing has unsurprisingly coincided with PSG's most successful era and he is still one of the world's elite defenders.

Not a bad quintet of superstars.

Unsurprisingly, if we took Messi out of the equation, Cristiano Ronaldo's 8.18 rating during his time in La Liga with Real Madrid would comfortably surpass any other player.

Will the Portuguese put himself in the frame to be the Serie A player of the decade for the 2020s?

He might be 35, but don't put it past him - and don't put it past Messi retaining his La Liga crown this decade too.
