There’s very little doubt that Kylian Mbappe is a Ballon d’Or winner in waiting. The 21-year-old is already one of the best players in world football, finishing sixth in the 2019 Ballon d’Or standings. He’s the second most expensive player in the history of the sport, costing Paris Saint-Germain an eye-watering £166 million. But it’s proven to be money well spent as the Frenchman has already scored 79 goals in his 107 appearances.Oh, and he’s a World Cup winner.

In truth, it’s all a bit easy for him.

Many football fans believe that he will soon leave PSG and France for a new challenge.

And they might be right after PSG thrashed St Etienne 6-1 in the Coupe de la Ligue quarter-final.

Mbappe only scored once in the match but it was all too easy for the wonderkid. That much could be seen in the 78th-minute when he attempted to score with an outrageous rabona from outside the box.

PSG were already 6-1 up and Edinson Cavani’s pass was dummied by Neymar and the ball rolled invitingly into the path of Mbappe.

But the former Monaco star had one thing on his mind - to attempt a first-time rabona.

He did just that and it curled agonisingly wide. It was so close.

If that had gone in, it would surely have gone down as one of the greatest goals ever scored.

Instead, Mbappe put his hands to his mouth as two St Etienne defenders looked at him almost in disbelief.

Mbappe isn't the first player to attempt to score a rabona from outside the box, of course.

Tottenham's Erik Lamela attempted it - and pulled it off - during his side's Europa League victory against Asteras Tripolis.

That's how it's done, Kylian!

Mbappe’s current contract expires in 2022 and he was in no mood to discuss his future after the game.

"For now, I am ready to play football," he said.

"It is January, it's the start of the final sprint where there are titles to play for. Therefore it's not the moment to make waves."

When Mbappe does move, expect him to become the most expensive footballer ever.
