Manchester United fans had a mixed Tuesday evening.

Supporters had to witness their club lose 3-1 in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg to Manchester City.

That result effectively put an end to their hopes of lifting the trophy.

But many fans were pleased after the game as it emerged that club captain Ashley Young was in advanced talks with Inter Milan.

While Young always gives it his all on the pitch, many fans simply think he isn't good enough anymore and were happy at the news that he was on the verge of leaving.

However, that may not be the case anymore.

That's because United are seemingly desperate to keep the 34-year-old.

And, according to Sky Sports News, the club have offered Young a one-year contract extension in order to fend off interest from Inter Milan.

That's bound to not go down well with fans at all.

If United were to tie Young down to an extension, they would be able to get a fee for him if they do decide to sell him in the summer.

The fee would only be minimal for a player approaching the end of his career but it would be better than nothing.

And keeping him at the club would also mean they don't have to rush around to find a replacement in January.

So, offering him a new deal, even though he's only a backup, does make sense.

But the majority of United fans probably aren't bothered by those factors and just want to see him gone.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke about Young's future earlier this week and hinted he wanted him to stay.

"Tonight’s not the night to talk about players leaving because we need the players that we have in the squad," Solskjaer said after United’s defeat to City, per the Metro.

"And we’ve got a few months left of this season, we can’t weaken ourselves we need to strengthen ourselves if any movement is going to happen."

Young has been given the opportunity to leave a struggling United and join a club battling for silverware in Italy.

Former United teammates Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez are also already at Inter so that would help him settling in.

For those reasons we wouldn't be surprised if he rejected United's deal and move to Italy.
