As it has been for the majority of the last 40 years, the Scottish Premier League is a two-hose race between Celtic and Rangers.

It's Celtic that currently have the advantage having picked up 52 points from their opening 20 games.

But Steven Gerrard's side are hot on their heels and could overtake them should they win their game in hand.

There's a massive gap back to third place.

Should both Celtic and Rangers win their games in hand, there would be a mammoth 18-point gap between third placed Motherwell.

It's clear that the two Glasgow sides are leaps and bounds better than the Scottish Premier League.

So, should they join the English football system?

It has been debated for years how Celtic and Rangers would do if they are allowed to compete alongside England's best clubs in the Premier League.

And the question has been raised again by Gerrard, who thinks that all clubs in the Scottish League should merge with the English leagues.

"I would love the Scottish league to filter into the English leagues, all of them, to save and help the Scottish game," he told Jamie Carragher on The Greatest Game podcast, per the BBC.

"People from England don't realise how big Celtic and Rangers are, because they only watch Old Firm games.

"Can you picture now a Premier League with those two clubs in? The atmosphere at Celtic Park and Rangers is off the scale. It's a unique experience.

But Gerrard has his doubts about whether his idea will come to fruition.

"I don't think it will ever happen, just because of the amount of power of the other [Premier League] clubs."

It's certainly an interesting proposition.

At this current time, Rangers and Celtic simply don't have the financial power or the quality needed to compete with the Premier League's best clubs.

However, that would all change if they are actually allowed to compete in England.

The two clubs have the fanbases needed to be a real success in the Premier League.

It'd also be a game changer in terms of the money the two clubs generate.

They are already two of the biggest clubs in Britain, meaning that they'd have no problem with attracting players, and they would have the money needed to buy their targets.

And it would create a interesting new dynamic if they were allowed to complete in England.

As Gerrard says, the notion that Celtic and Rangers join the Premier League is unlikely. But it would be fascinating if it happened.
