The reveal of each team's new kit each season is now part and parcel of the football calendar.

Expensive though it may be to fork out £50+ every 12 months for a new shirt, it never fails to provide fans with excitement.

The likes of Nike, New Balance, and Adidas are constantly competing with each other to come up with the most stylish designs.

In striving to produce some memorable attire, many of those corporations have also teamed up with clubs to create concepts for kits marking special anniversaries.

Soccerbible have listed 25 of the best commemorative shirts and it seems the idea is becoming more popular all the time.

A remarkable 14 of the kits mentioned were released in the last year.

Not only are commemorative shirts an obvious money-spinner, they are also a unique way of recognising the club's history.

Using Soccerbible's list, we've ranked all 25 from best to worst.

25. Werder Bremen 120th Anniversary Shirt (2019)

Werder Bremen's 120th anniversary may have been a special occasion, but there was really no excuse for this to be perfectly honest.

24. Marseille 120 Year Anniversary Shirt (2019)

Nothing says prestige and tradition like a massive 'Uber Eats' logo. Their hold over Ligue 1 really knows no bounds. We do quite enjoy the metallic fade on the Marseille and PUMA logos nonetheless.

23. Angers SCO Centenary Collectors Shirt (2019)

Not an awful lot of imagination may have gone into this design, but sometimes simplicity does the trick. Angers faced Arsenal in pre-season in an all-white strip to celebrate 100 years since their founding.

22. Brazil Copa America 100th Anniversary Jersey (2019)

Of course, the most important way the Selecao commemorated 100 years since their first Copa America was with another triumph in the competition.

21. Club Deportivo Guadalajara Club World Cup Shirt (2018)

There is a slight pyjama vibe, admittedly, but the thought behind it is worth mentioning. The Mexican side were delighted to have qualified for the Club World Cup and released just 2018 editions of this special kit, which took inspiration from some of their most successful periods in the late 60s and early 70s.

20. Inter Milan x Nike 20 Year Anniversary Shirt (2019)

The 'wave' design is what separated this Inter kit from their regular Nerazzurri stripes.

19. Manchester United Centenary Reversible Shirt (2001/02)

If you were the parent of a young Manchester United fan in the late 90s and early 00s, you might as well have filed for bankruptcy, the number of kits the Red Devils used to bring out. Umbro created a reversible shirt to mark 100 years since United (in their current form, not Newton Heath) were born, available in both white and black and black and gold.

18. Poland Centenary Shirt (2019)

To mark 100 years since the Polish FA was founded, Nike merged the country's home and away kits to create a shirt closely resembling the national flag.

17. Lazio 115 Year Anniversary Shirt (2015)

Now, 115 years is *sort of* an anniversary, albeit a very tenuous one. Miroslav Klose made Lazio's custom-made kit look very suave in a 3-1 win over AC Milan.

16. Lille OSC 75th Anniversary Jersey (2019)

Again, 75 years is not actually a real anniversary - but what was to stop Lille jumping on the bandwagon? A fine piece of work by New Balance.

15. Stuttgart “Original” Jersey (2018)

A perfect example of when simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. PUMA's influence is subtle, their logo blending into the predominantly white shirt. The ‘Brustring’ along the middle was significant in Stuttgart's history, as they typically won trophies whenever it featured.

14. Celtic 125th Anniversary Kit (2012/13)

Throughout the 2012/13 season, Celtic celebrated another march towards the title with a slight twist on their regular seven hoops by utilising a design of nine thinner hoops. It was an acknowledgement of the greatest period in their illustrious history, when they won nine league titles in a row between 1965-1974.

13. Inter Milan Centenary Away Shirt (2007/08)

Inter also went to the drawing board in 2007/08, minimising the Pirelli sponsorship logo and instead making the focus a giant red cross on a white background, symbolising the flag of Milan.

12. Fulham 140 Year Anniversary Shirt (2019)

Fulham's 140-year anniversary shirt was exceptionally hard to come by, seeing as only 1879 (the year of their founding) were ever made.

11. Everton Goodison Park 125-Year Commemorative Shirt (2017)

Plenty of clubs have released shirts to mark their founding, but Everton came up with a novel take on the commemorative jersey by recognising 125 years since Goodison Park first opened its doors. The collar, bare shirt-front and the old Everton emblem gave it a real classic feel.

10. France Centenary Jersey (2019)

Les Bleus thrashed Iceland in an elegant royal blue, the gold threading of the player numbers, World Cup winning badge and French emblem making this a kit to remember.

9. Toulouse 80th Anniversary Shirt (2017)

Toulouse went above and beyond by even designing a unique badge incorporating all three logos which have been used over the past 80 years.

8. Chelsea FA Cup Commemorative Kit (2020)

The yellow socks put a dampener on what is otherwise a very classy piece of kit, worn in the FA Cup third round win over Nottingham Forest earlier this month to mark 50 years since Chelsea first lifted the trophy.

7. AC Milan 120th Anniversary Commemorative Shirt (2019)

A gold '120' was added to the Milan logo, on top of condensed, thinner Rossoneri stripes.

6. Manchester City 125th Anniversary Shirt (2019)

Much of City's 125-year history hasn't exactly been worth making a shirt over. However, PUMA seized the moment in 2019 when with the input of fans, they knocked together this slick retro-style kit for the Community Shield win over Liverpool.

5. Kaizer Chiefs 50th Anniversary Jersey (2020)

It's almost the spitting image of a mid-00s United kit. Kaizer Chiefs marked a half-century with a smooth black and gold kit, also allowing their fans in for free to watch a 3-0 win over Highlands Park.

4. Barcelona Centenary Shirt (1999/00)

The Blaugrana broke new ground by commissioning Nike to engineer this masterpiece. Louis Van Gaal's men had a frustrating year though, finishing second in La Liga and only making the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.

3. Manchester Utd Munich Air Disaster Memorial kit (2008)

United and City both wore shirts with no sponsors on for the 2008 derby at Old Trafford. It was a poignant tribute to the 1958 Munich Air Disaster. The hosts' kit didn't have the club emblem on either, closely resembling the type of shirts donned by the likes of the great Duncan Edwards.

2. Juventus 120 Year Anniversary Shirt (2017)

Juventus' Bianconeri stripes are sacred, hence why their current 'half-and-half' kit sparked uproar when it was first released by Adidas. The Old Lady's 120th anniversary kit, worn two years ago against Benvento, was a much more fitting nod to their heritage.

1. Borussia Dortmund Blackout Centenary Shirt (2019)

A thing of beauty, this shirt inevitably sold-out in a matter of minutes. Dortmund are adored by neutrals around the globe, but their centenary 'blackout' kit had a more local feel as a gesture to mark the end of the coal industry in the Ruhr region of Germany.

Honourable mentions should also go to Tottenham's 125th anniversary kit (worn vs Aston Villa 2007/08) and Liverpool's own 'blackout' shirt from 2019, marking the centenary of Bob Paisley's birth.
