EA Sports have officially unveiled their Team of the Year for FIFA 20.
The final XI went as follows: Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Matthijs de Ligt, Andrew Robertson, N’Golo Kante, Kevin De Bruyne, Frenkie de Jong, Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Sadio Mane.
Naturally, a lot of the reaction surrounded the fact Cristiano Ronaldo was omitted from the team, but EA quickly addressed the fact by unveiling him as their ’12th player.’
Whether or not you think that’s a reach, the gaming company was clearly pretty impressed with his year because they gave him the same 99 rating as both Messi and Van Dijk.
It certainly seems pretty generous when you consider Ronaldo had one of the most low-key years of his career and the fact he wasn’t given perfect FUT cards in either FIFA 12, 13 or 14.
- Messi and Suarez still back Ernesto Valverde
- Eight times Messi thought he was a hard man
- Lionel Messi squares up to Atletico’s Joao Felix
FIFA 20 TOTY cards
Nevertheless, there’s no going back now and it gives us yet another tantalising opportunity to put the forever-linked Ronaldo and Messi under the spotlight for comparison.
Messi emerged victorious 19-10 when we compared the in-game stats on their base cards and now we’ve decided to see what has changed now they have an identical overall rating.
We can confirm that the final score has changed and using data from FUTHead, you can now scroll down to see how the two players matched up across the 29 attributes.

GIVEMESPORT’s Kobe Tong says
This just doesn’t sit right.
Look, it’s a video game at the end of the day and not to be taken too seriously, but it seems as though EA have grossly overrated Ronaldo’s year to either appease the man himself or his fans.
In essence, it’s suggested that Ronaldo has outperformed Messi in the months since FIFA 20’s initial release in order to level them up.
But in what universe should Ronaldo catch up with Messi for finishing when he’s scored one goal fewer this season? And by the way, four of the Portuguese’s goals have been penalties…
We’re not saying that Messi has somehow blown his rival out of the water in 2019/20, because he hasn’t, but the stats are making out that Ronaldo finished the year looking like a world-beater.
Perhaps, sometimes, selling cards and games really is more important than accuracy to real life.
