Arsenal's David Luiz took an inexplicable free-kick during Crystal Palace draw

Arsenal endured another frustrating afternoon away to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

It looked as though the Gunners had turned a new page with their 2-0 win over Manchester United, but there were signs of the same old frailties during their draw at Selhurst Park.

Arsenal played much better during the first-half with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scoring after 12 minutes, calmly converting a one-on-one finish from Alexandre Lacazette's through ball.

However, Jordan Ayew pegged them back after the half-time break, profiting from a massive deflection off David Luiz to loop the ball over Bernd Leno. More on one of those players later.

And things went from bad to worse for Arsenal when VAR upgraded a yellow card given to Aubameyang for a challenge on Max Meyer, meaning he was given his marching orders.

Nicolas Pepe almost rescued three points for the visitors in the closing moments, but Arsenal's hopes of victory died when his strike rattled the post.

However, there could have been another chance for glory if it wasn't for Luiz's baffling decision making with just five minutes left on the clock.

Arsenal won a free-kick barely two yards advanced from the centre-circle and Luiz made the inexplicable move of shooting instead of floating it into the area.

David Luiz's brainless free-kick

Instead, his bungled attempt went flying into the Selhurst Park stands and left his teammates completely bewildered as they trotted towards goal.

GIVEMESPORT's Kobe Tong says

Imagine the scenario: you've only scored one free-kick in the last half-decade and you're faced with a dead-ball that is closer to the halfway line than the goal.

You're playing for a football team who have won just two Premier League games in 15 and you have a rare opportunity to tee up a third despite your teammate being sent off.

You've never scored from this range. Barely anyone has ever scored from this range, never mind from a dead-ball when you're a centre-back. It's just impossible. You should cross.

What do you do? Shoot. Geeze.

Ok, call me harsh, but you've got to be livid with Luiz if you're Arteta because this was a real chance to ruffle Palace's feathers late on, especially when you're down to 10 men.

Even if Luiz managed to get his shot on target, it would have taken divine intervention or an absolute clanger from Vicente Guaita for it to put Arsenal 2-1 up.

You never know with sport, but you can be pretty certain when it comes to 50-yard free-kicks...
