Inter Milan's 1-1 draw with Atalanta last night saw VAR sadly sink to a new low.The technology has been an incredibly divisive topic in the Premier League this season and it seems controversy is far from limited to the English top-flight.With Inter leading 1-0, striker Lautaro Martinez - who had opened the scoring - had a moment of utter madness inside his own penalty area. The Argentine striker bizarrely grabbed Atalanta defender Rafael Toloi by the foot just as he was about to tap the ball in from a few yards out.Inter eventually cleared the ball, but the Atalanta boys were understandably incensed and replays supported their arguement.

So in the days of VAR, a penalty would be awarded and Martinez sent off for denying a clear goal scoring opportunity without attempting to play the ball, right?

Absolutely not. Inter and Martinez went unpunished and once again the use of technology at the highest level has been devalued.

If it can't spot such a glaring error in a game between two of Italy's top sides, but can apparently spot if a players' armpit is offside, then what on earth is the point?

Thankfully, Atalanta did equalise through Robin Gosens in the 76th minute and Luis Muriel then went on to miss a penalty two minutes before time to win the game.

Despite his side missing a penalty they were awarded, Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini was fuming with the ineptness of the VAR.

“I don’t understand why VAR didn’t call it. The game is over now, but these things are ugly to see. This type of error should not be allowed in the age of VAR. It’s incomprehensible,” Gasperini said, per Football Italia.

“I feel bad for those in the VAR booth, because this kind of error takes something away from a very valuable technology. I feel personally that it ought to be used only on situations that are clear and this really was clear.”

VAR is comfortably the most inconsistent thing in football right now!
