We’re now firmly into the second half of the 2019/20 Premier League season.

Every club has now played 22 out of 38 matches - with the exception of league-leaders Liverpool and West Ham, who have a game in hand - following Sunday’s fixtures.

Liverpool now find themselves 14 points clear of second-placed Manchester City following this weekend’s results, while Norwich sit eight points from safety at the opposite end of the table.

But which clubs have fielded the most expensive starting line-ups this season based on market value?

Transfermarkt.com have listed each team’s most valuable XI from the current campaign, starting with Sheffield United in 20th place.

20. Sheffield United (£73.8m)

Game: Manchester City 2-0 Sheffield United (Dec 29, 2019)

Starting line-up: Henderson; O’Connell, Basham, Egan; Norwood, Besic, Fleck, Baldock, Stevens; Robinson, Mousset.

Sheffield United, currently sixth in the table, have been this season’s surprise package.

Goalkeeper Dean Henderson, on-loan from Manchester United, is considered the Blades’ most expensive player at £13.5 million.

19. Norwich City (£84.15m)

Game: Leicester City 1-1 Norwich City (Dec 14, 2019)

Starting line-up: Krul; Godfrey, Zimmermann, Bryam, Aarons; Trybull, Tettey, Cantwell, McLean; Buendia, Pukki.

With 14 points from 22 games, 20th-placed Norwich appear to be doomed. Emiliano Buendia is the club’s most expensive player at £16.2 million.

18. Burnley (£120.6m)

Game: Bournemouth 0-1 Burnley (Dec 21, 2019)

Starting line-up: Pope; Mee, Tarkowski, Taylor, Bardsley; Cork, Westwood, Hendrick, McNeil; Barnes, Wood.

Burnley have lost their last four league fixtures and must improve their form in order to avoid being dragged into a relegation dogfight. James Tarkowski (value at £22.5 million) and his teammates need to turn things around at Turf Moor over the coming weeks.

17. Watford (£124.2m)

Game: Watford 0-0 Crystal Palace (Dec 7, 2019)

Starting line-up: Foster; Cathcart, Kabasele, Masina, Femenia; Capoue, Doucoure, Pereyra, Deulofeu; Sarr, Deeney.

Nigel Pearson deserves huge credit for turning Watford around in recent weeks.

Ismaila Sarr, valued at £27 million, is currently the Hornets’ priciest squad member.

16. Brighton (£134.1m)

Game: Crystal Palace 1-1 Brighton (Dec 16. 2019)

Starting line-up: Ryan; Dunk, Webster, Burn, Montoya; Bissouma, Propper, Gross, Trossard; Mooy, Maupay.

In 16th place, it’s Brighton, who currently sit 14th in the Premier League table.

Neal Maupay is the team’s top scorer with seven league goals and the Frenchman is valued at £19.8 million.

15. Newcastle United (£140.4m)

Game: Newcastle 2-1 Bournemouth (Nov 9, 2019)

Starting line-up: Dubravka; Clark, Lascelles, Fernandez, Willems, Yedlin; Hayden, Shelvey, Saint-Maximin; Almiron, Joelinton.

Newcastle haven’t done too badly under Steve Bruce this season, despite the fears of fans when the Englishman was named as Rafa Benitez’s replacement.

Joelinton has only scored one goal in 22 league appearances but he’s their most expensive player, according to Transfermarkt, at £31.5 million.

14. Southampton (£141.3m)

Game: Tottenham 2-1 Southampton (Sep 28, 2019)

Starting line-up: Gunn; Vestergaard, Yoshida, Bednarek; Romeu, Hojbjerg, Ward-Prowse, Bertrand, Boufal; Redmond, Ings.

Southampton have turned around their season in recent weeks and now sit 12th in the Premier League table.

Two of their players are valued at £18 million: Jannik Vestergaard and Nathan Redmond.

13. Aston Villa (£148.5m)

Game: Aston Villa 1-3 Southampton (Dec 21, 2019)

Starting line-up: Heaton; Hause, Engels, Targett, Guilbert; Luiz, McGinn, Hourihane, Grealish; El Ghazi, Wesley.

Aston Villa sit just inside the relegation zone after being thrashed 6-1 by Manchester City on Sunday.

If they go down then Jack Grealish (valued at £31.5 million) will surely get a move to another Premier League club.

12. Bournemouth (£182.7m)

Game: Bournemouth 1-0 Manchester United (Nov 2, 2019)

Starting line-up: Ramsdale; Ake, Cook, Rico, Smith; Lerma, Billing, Fraser, Wilson; King, Wilson.

Bournemouth sit 19th in the table at the time of writing and Eddie Howe is a manager under pressure.

He has a decent squad at his disposal, with Nathan Ake (£31.5 million) among the stars he’s able to call upon.

11. West Ham (£230.8m)

Game: West Ham 1-2 Leicester City (Dec 28, 2019)

Starting line-up: Fabianski; Balbuena, Diop, Masuaku, Fredericks; Sanchez, Rice, Fornals, Lanzini, Anderson; Haller.

Past the £200 million mark and we have West Ham, now managed by David Moyes.

Declan Rice is the club’s most expensive player at £49.5 million.

10. Wolves (£248.4m)

Game: Norwich 1-2 Wolves (Dec 21, 2019)

Starting line-up: Patricio; Coady, Saiss, Dendoncker; Neves, Moutinho, Doherty, Otto, Jota, Traore; Jimenez.

Wolves have been superb this season and are currently battling for a place in the top six.

Their most expensive player is Ruben Neves, who’s valued at £45 million.

9. Crystal Palace (£257.4m)

Game: Sheffield United 1-0 Crystal Palace (Aug 19, 2019)

Starting line-up: Guaita; Dann, Kelly, Van Aanholt, Ward; Milivojevic, McArthur, Meyer, Townsend; Zaha, Benteke.

Crystal Palace are ninth, with Wilfried Zaha (£40.5 million) unsurprisingly rated as their most expensive footballer.

8. Everton (£288.9m)

Game: Everton 1-0 Watford (Aug 17, 2019)

Starting line-up: Pickford; Keane, Mina, Digne, Coleman; Gbamin, Gomes, Sigurdsson, Bernard, Richarlison; Calvert-Lewin.

Now managed by the revered Carlo Ancelotti, Everton are aiming to seal a top-half finish this season.

Richarlison is the club’s most expensive player at £45 million.

7. Leicester City (£350.1m)

Game: Manchester City 3-1 Leicester City (Dec 21, 2019)

Starting line-up: Schmeichel; Evans, Soyuncu, Chilwell, Pereira; Ndidi, Tielemans, Maddison, Barnes, Perez; Vardy.

They may have lost to Southampton this weekend, but Leicester are still flying high in third place.

They have some serious talent in their squad but James Maddison (£54 million) is the priciest of them all.

6. Arsenal (£408.6m)

Game: Arsenal 2-2 Crystal Palace (Oct 27, 2019)

Starting line-up: Leno; Sokratis, Luiz, Tierney, Chambers; Xhaka, Guendouzi, Ceballos, Pepe; Lacazette, Aubameyang.

This was a dark afternoon for Arsenal and Granit Xhaka, in particular.

Arsenal’s most expensive player on the pitch was summer signing Nicolas Pepe, who Transfermarkt value at £67.5m - a figure just shy of the £72 million the Gunners paid Lille.

5. Manchester United (£467.1m)

Game: Wolves 1-1 Manchester United (Aug 19, 2019)

Starting line-up: De Gea; Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw, Wan-Bissaka; Pogba, McTominay, Lingard, Rashford, James; Martial.

It’s been a topsy-turvy season for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Man Utd, who deployed their strongest line-up against Wolves in August.

Paul Pogba (£90 million) is still the club’s most expensive player, with Marcus Rashford (£72 million) not far behind.

4. Chelsea (£501.3m)

Game: Chelsea 0-1 Bournemouth (Dec 14, 2019)

Starting line-up: Kepa; Rudiger, Zouma, Emerson, Azpilicueta; Jorginho, Kante, Mount, Pulisic, Willian; Abraham.

Now past the £500 million mark, Chelsea’s most expensive line-up this season was deployed in the 1-0 defeat against Bournemouth.

N’Golo Kante is the Blues’ most expensive player at £90 million.

3. Tottenham (£559.8m)

Game: Liverpool 2-1 Tottenham (Oct 27, 2019)

Starting line-up: Gazzaniga; Alderweireld, Sanchez, Rose, Aurier; Winks, Sissoko, Alli, Son, Eriksen; Kane.

Valued at a whopping £135 million, Harry Kane is largely responsible for Tottenham’s expensive market value XI.

2. Manchester City (£724.5m)

Game: Manchester City 2-2 Tottenham (Aug 17, 2019)

Starting line-up: Ederson; Laporte, Otamendi, Zinchenko, Walker; Rodri, Gundogan, Silva, De Bruyne, Sterling; Aguero.

Man City have expensive players all over the pitch but Raheem Sterling (£126 million) is the priciest of them all, just ahead of Kevin De Bruyne (£117 million).

1. Liverpool (£838.8m)

Game: Leicester City 0-4 Liverpool (Dec 26. 2019)

Starting line-up: Alisson; Van Dijk, Gomez, Robertson, Alexander-Arnold; Henderson, Keita, Mane, Salah; Firmino.

But in first place, it’s the Premier League title favourites Liverpool.

Valued at a whopping £838 million, the Reds crushed Leicester 4-0 thanks to the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah (both £135 million) and, of course, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£99 million).

Unsurprisingly, there is a direct correlation between squad value and position in the Premier League table.

The more your players cost, the higher in the table you’ll probably finish.
