Thibaut Courtois' highlights v Atletico shows why he's been called the world's best goalkeeper

Real Madrid v Club Atletico de Madrid - Supercopa de Espana Final

Thibaut Courtois' Real Madrid career has been up and down.

The Belgian goalkeeper had just won the Golden Glove at the 2018 World Cup when he made the £35m move to Los Blancos.

But he has made numerous errors while at the club.

Courtois has been ridiculed by some football fans for his performances in a white shirt.

A few Real Madrid fans have even booed him in the past.

But he proved all his critics wrong with a heroic performance in the Supercopa final against Atletico Madrid on Sunday evening.

Courtois was able to keep a clean sheet as Real Madrid won on penalties.

He had little to do in the first half, but he made some brilliant saves after the break.

Atletico looked almost certainly to go 1-0 up when Alvaro Morata ran through in the 79th minute, only for Courtois to come to his side's rescue.

He the made three brilliant saves in extra-time, the best of which perhaps coming in the 118th minute.

A cross from the right-wing hit Ferland Mendy, but Courtois showed great reactions to get down low and save at the near post.

Courtois then made a terrific save from Thomas Partey in the penalty shootout to become the hero for his side.

It really was a great performance you can watch highlights of it below:

All-in-all, Courtois made eight saves during the 120 minutes. He then made that crucial save to deny Partey in the shootout.

Federico Valverde might have won Man-of-the-Match, but Real Madrid will have Courtois a lot to thank for.

His performance led to Florentino Perez giving him some big praise.

“We thought he [Courtois] was the best goalkeeper in the world and he has shown that,” Perez told Movistar Plus after the game, per Goal.

Courtois also discussed both his and his side's display.

"I am very happy for another zero goals conceded and with good stops. This is very important," he said.

"We are very happy. It was a hard-fought match against Atletico. Their style of play is waiting for an error from the other team.

"They could have taken advantage of that a few times. I managed to save some, Fede stopped one.

"I think I could stop Alvaro by coming out, but he got away and Fede made the tackle. We took advantage of that well and we were the more confident team in the penalty shootout."

Courtois isn't considered the best goalkeeper in the world by many at the moment - that title goes to Alisson Becker.

But that may all change if he continues putting in displays like his one against Atletico.
