It simply wouldn’t be a Premier League gameweek without a bit of VAR controversy.

After a weekend of FA Cup third-round matches - where VAR only featured at top-flight stadiums - the Premier League returned on Friday night as Sheffield United took on West Ham.

And it set the tone for the weekend - VAR ruling out goals.

West Ham were denied a last-minute equaliser after replays showed that the ball had touched Declan Rice’s arm before he set-up Robert Snodgrass.

VAR would go on and disallow a further three goals during the weekend, as well as overturning a penalty award.

But here at GIVEMESPORT, we try to totally ignore VAR.

That’s why, each week, we work out how the Premier League table would look without VAR.

To do so, we look at every overturned VAR decision from the previous gameweek and speculate how it’s affected each match.

So, how does the table look after gameweek 22’s controversies?

Let’s take a look:

2nd | Man City | Points: 50 | Points difference: +3

NO OVERTURNED VAR DECISIONS IN GAMEWEEK 22

3rd | Leicester | Points: 41 | Points difference: -4

Game: Southampton (H)

Incident 1: Shane Long thought he'd earned Southampton a 63rd-minute penalty when Jon Moss pointed to the spot after a foul from Caglar Soyuncu. But VAR adjudged Long to be offside when he received the ball.

Incident 2: Jonny Evans scored a 90th-minute equaliser but VAR ruled it out for offside.

Outcome without VAR (DRAW): A tricky one to work out. Southampton would have won a 63rd-minute penalty without VAR and we can only assume they would have scored it to go 2-1 up. How would that have changed the game? Well, Leicester would have had 25 minutes to push for an equaliser and, considering Evans had a late equaliser ruled out by VAR, we think a draw would have been the most likely outcome without the use of technology.

4th | Chelsea | Points: 41 | Points difference: +2

Game: Burnley (H)

Incident: Jeff Hendrick's 19th-minute opener was disallowed by VAR due to Ben Mee's marginal offside.

Outcome without VAR (CHELSEA WIN): Burnley would have gone 1-0 up without VAR and it could have been a very different match. But the Blues dominated the game on Saturday and should have won by more than the 3-0 scoreline. Therefore, we think Frank Lampard's side would have had enough to come from behind to secure the win.

5th | Wolves | Points: 36 | Points difference: +5

6th | Man Utd | Points: 32 | Points difference: -2

NO OVERTURNED VAR DECISIONS IN GAMEWEEK 22

7th | Sheffield United | Points: 31 | Points difference: -1

Game: West Ham (H)

Incident: West Ham were denied an injury-time equaliser after VAR spotted Declan Rice's handball before he set-up Robert Snodgrass.

Outcome without VAR (DRAW): This one is obvious. As the incident occurred in the 92nd-minute, Snodgrass would have made it 1-1 with virtually the last kick of the match. Draw.

8th | Arsenal | Points: 31 | Points difference: +3

Game: Crystal Palace (A)

Incident: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's 65th-minute challenge on Max Meyer was upgraded from a yellow card to a red card after a VAR check.

Outcome without VAR (DRAW): There's an argument to be had that, with 11 men for the last 25 minutes, Arsenal would have beaten Palace. But they didn't do enough in the first 65 minutes to convince us that they could win the game so we think a draw is fair.

9th | Everton | Points: 31 | Points difference: +3

Game: Brighton (H)

Incident: Dominic Calvert-Lewin looked to have made it 2-0 to Everton in the 77th-minute but VAR ruled it out following his handball.

Outcome without VAR (EVERTON WIN): Everton still won 1-0 without Calvert-Lewin's goal. Without VAR, it would have been a 2-0 win.
